induction kits on E36 M3s
Discussion
My understanding is you do need to be slightly wary of induction kits on the E36s, as kits using an oiled filter can sometimes cause the MAF to get gummed up, causing fuelling issues. That's the case on M3 Evos anyway.
Personally, I'd be negotiating money off unless he has the original airbox and fixings as well.

Why wary?
Depending on the kit, it's very unlikely it's making more power, but it also won't be damaging the engine.
well you hear things I suppose and I have heard that certain kits can/may damage engine but i was not aware of this, although as you say they do not seem to do much in the way of power gains...I cannot see what make it is I will try to find out Depending on the kit, it's very unlikely it's making more power, but it also won't be damaging the engine.
thanks for the reply

Dan,
Does the Simota kit use a dry filter?
Any performance gains or is it all about the noise?

I've got a Simota on mine ~ worth 8hp on the RR at Evolve. I'm sure it is a dry filter ; certainly had no MAF / fuelling issues since it was fitted. Noise is good too though........ Does the Simota kit use a dry filter?

Yeah, looks like a GruppeM rep (I had one on a Z3MC). I have a DaveF oiled (K&N) filter on my 3ltr without problems. In fact the engine made over 300bhp on both Powerstation's (Tewkesbury) rolling road and at Perfect Touch in Hoddesdon with the X-pipe decat and mapping the only mods.
ETA car has done 35k since DaveF installed with no problems

Good to know. I've done 12k with my Dave F kit with no problems at all. Sounds awesome and definitely pulls harder at higher RPM. Just wondering if it was a worthwhile investment to protect the MAF, not convinced it's an issue unless you over oil it after cleaning.
I've done more than 30k with my DaveF with the oiled K&N filter with no issues at all. Gassing Station | M Power | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
