2001 e39 M5 - FBMWSH - What oil do they use?
Discussion
Thanks for the quick reply Matt. I know there's quite a few different recommendations which I hope to research in the next few weeks. What I'm after at the moment is just to top up with whatever is in there.
Just looked on the OPIE website and they also recommend the Edge 0W-30 - I'm assuming that's what they're told to recommend by BMW - what do you think?

There's been a bit of debate over this.
Apparantly early E39 M5s should use Castrol Edge 10W60(It was originally Castrol TWS Motorsport, but this is no longer available).
Later cars, from about March 2000 onwards with the modified piston ring design, should use Castrol Edge 0W30.
To be honest, I doubt that it will make much difference either way.

I understood the oil you choose can also be affected by the temperatures you run it at. If you do loads of short journeys, and therefore lower temps, then a lower vicsocity oil would be better (0W-30), but if you are on long blats everywhere, use the 10W60. I have TWS in mine at the mo. but might shove some ought-thirty in over winter...
