Morning Chaps

I have been on the hunt for an E36 and under normal circumstances I wouldn't touch an SMG.

However, one has come up with apparently, a very large recent bill for a complete REPLACEMENT of all things SMG, the whole box and hydraulics alledgedly....

Question time:

What are they like when they're working ok?
Are they involving and agressive?
Is there an auto mode? even if it's ste.
Is there options w.r.t speed and severity of shift a la E46.
Am I a tool for considering it?

A fair few spec'd it on later cars so it cant be complete ste can it?

I'm just after some opinions from those who have experienced it. I know it's reputed to be nowhere near as good as the E46 but it's a sub £5K car and everything else about it is exactly what I want spec wise...

Thanks in advance - Nick.

I had one. It worked fine. there's no shift speed selector like the E46 but it does shift quicker if you are giving it the beans. The Auto mode is great for around town.
You do hear horror stories of them going wrong mind you. I found it to be decent enough, not lightening fast but acceptable.

Sold it because the M3 was my only car at the time and it bored me. Now I have the 355 as well, I think I'd like an SMG again, for bumbling around town!

Yes I had one too and drove in auto mode 80% of the time. You certainly have to learn how to drive it and it is a flawed system but overall I have no regrets getting one. SMG is great when pressing on, if the rest of the car is up to scratch go for it.

Not wanting to scare you off but i spent MEGA MONEY trying to correct all the little SMG gremlins. In the end i converted the car over to a regular `stick shift`.
In `auto mode` around town it does give you the best of both worlds and as mentioned you do have to learn how to drive it and use it properly. When in `manual mode`, pressing on is made really quite easy indeed.

Well I went to see it yesterday and a deal has been done...

It didn't take too long to get used to the box and I have witnessed the £5400 bill for the SMG complete replacement, why on earth the seller didn't just convert it to 6M I dont know....

Scabby bootlid, arches fine, pulling slightly to the left but to be honest I would refresh the front end soon enough anyway... Auto mode is a bit harsh but welcome none the less. I guess I'll just drive it until the SMG breaks again (fully prepared that it might) and then convert it I guess...

Should get it at the weekend, at which point I will clean it, the inside looks like a farm yard and the paint needs a polish.....

Finally if anyone has a set of Silver vaders they consider surplus to requirements, let me know !

Pics to follow....
