Release cable failed

Just tried to open the bonnet to change a headlight bulb and the cable isn't working..!!! I've taken the handle off in the car and can see the cable still attached, so I'm thinking it's failed in the engine bay, any ideas on how to open it? (E36 M3 Cab)

Might find some joy if you can get the grills out, however it's most likey an axle stands and maybe bumper off job.

It's still connected inside the car, it seems to have come loose in the engine bay
