Anyone know if its possible (practically and costwise) to fit a CSL rack into a 'normal' E46 M3?

Welcome to a new week!

I don't see why not. After all, the M3 CS uses the CSL rack.

Also, a common mod to the older E36 is the Z3 1.9 rack which bolts in without issue.

Had a look on realoem and it shows a different rack for the 'competiiton package' (its a US site maybe?). Anyway, the 'competition' rack is same PN as CSL. All other parts are the same on Coupe with competition pack, so its just the rack that needs to be changed I think.

yes Like I said, the CS (Comp Pack) uses the same rack as the CSL.

Ergo it will fit your M3.

In the past I've heard people say there may be issues with stuff for the DSC, like steering angle sensor. No idea if there is any truth in it, but the CS may well have had different software to both the CSL and std M3.

No, it's not as simple as that.

The CSL and CS have a different rack, and therefore a different steering angle sensor and associated electronics.

If you just fitted the rack, it would mess up the DSC as it wouldn't have the correct steering angle.

Could fit the diffentet steering angle sensor as well, no? Obviously would need to be calibrated.

The CS will also have the same DSC unit as the CSL which is different to the regular M3.

Try fitting CSL wheels or front spacers first, dials out a lot of the understeer, you might decide you don't need the quick rack.

Hear what you say about the understeer, but my motive is to get a quicker rack. Looks like I'l leave as it is then.

Thanks for responses.

It is annoying isn't it, as I too would have really liked the quicker rack.

Requires too much arm twirling to get the opposite lock on for my liking.

I too would like a csl steering rack! The standard rack on the M3 is terrible. Even my P reg fiesta has better steering lol

Anyone know the cost of a csl steering column?
