When pushing gear selector over to right you should have a large D on the dash. This is auto mode. A small D and you have to manual change. If showing small D then push to the right again and large D should come up.

yes it can be driven fully auto, there is 11 settings/modes on the gearbox, A mode(auto mode) 1-5, and S mode 1-6.

push the gear lever over to the right and release to change from A to S modes.

Surely you know about smg if you bought one!

Any more q's just ask

Don't be so offensive. You have an old one and the software has never been updated. Otherwise, you'd know that about five years ago, BMW updated the SMG software and swapped A for D. My first SMG M3 had the update during a service, so I saw it change. It also brought in the annoying "feature" of making it start in D every time.

I have 'A's rather than 'D's..is it worth getting the software updated ? (and more importantly, out of warranty is it free ?)
