E36 M3 clatter on start up!
Discussion
Well good news on suspension issues but day 2 and whats this!! A clatter on start up has appeared?! Only lasts 2-3secs and then is gone, car revs and sounds superb (like silk) everywhere else and as soon as the noise has ended you cant make it clatter again even by giving it a few revs but owch does it sound bad when it does it!
It's the 3.0 M3 so single vanos and I've never heard of an issue with that but it does sound rather vanos like to me?! I've also found a little oil bubbling in very small quantities out of the top grub screw next to the oil feed line that feeds the vanos unit. I asume this will be related but after winding it in a bit and then realising it is some kind of adjustment! I wound it out to 'about' where it was and left it.
Hmmm so yet again. Help?
Pic for identifying two grub screws next to oil inlet line:- (what do these two grub screws do?

Hi mate. The 3.0L was never immune from VANOS issues. It is from hot or cold? My EVO used to rumble like crazy when started but as you say, only for a couple of seconds. I presume the hot, thinner oil would drain out. It means nothing anyway. Do you know what oil is in it for certain?
Have you tried tightening up the weaping screw?

Still cant find what I need on those pics or the website I'm afraid. No one seems to mention those little grub screws?! Well I tightened it slightly from where it was originally and cant see any adverse affects?! Seems just the same and funnily enough it hasn't done it again yet.
Most interestingly though it is exactly as the man says.. only happened when the oil was really hot (because i'd just come back from a quick 'testing session'
) don't know what oil is in there at the moment but what would be the most likely part to be wearing and cause this?
I know it's not much of an issue now and it is DEFINATELY not losing any power yet.. BOY is it better than I remember my old one being. Only a matter of time though before this gets worse, can't see it going away so if I can prevent more troubles by sorting it early. All the better.
Cheers very much for the help so far though.
