E39 M5 Going rate?
Discussion
I am looking for an E39 M5 and have about 9-10k to spend. I have come to realise
that Im not going to get a decent facelift model for this budget but can I get a pre-facelift?
I looked at one today with 50k miles perfect interior and FSH but the body and wheels were scruffy.
Too many stonechip scabs and scuffs/dents for my liking. Should I just expect this at the age?
I think ill have to wait another couple of months and try to aim a bit higher.
Any opinions?

getting the alloys fixed is not that expensive and any car that is now 7-10 years old is going to need some costmetic work...a front end respray is not silly money.
I would be most concerned with bills, accident damage, history and recent parts replaced.
Finding a good car is not hard....finding one that suits your requirements could be more difficult.
Be prepared to spend good money looking after the car however!

Your budget will net you a nice one Rich. There are plenty out there so you can afford to be picky. Be prepared to travel though; most as you'll know are down south.

I do realise they are not going to be perfect at this age, and i dont mind the chips/scuffs so much but this thing had far too much rust for my liking.I would be most concerned with bills, accident damage, history and recent parts replaced.

does anybody refurb the wheels to the standard smoked finish? I thought that would be quite hard to do.

GP it shall stay now though.Bear in mind also that anything you buy up here will have been subject to at least 7 winters, whereas the warmer climes darn saaarf tend to be more sympathetic.
Excessive rust may mean accident damage. If it doesnt look right then you were wise to leave it.
My cars bodywork was a bit tatty when I bought it, the wheels needed sorting and for £600 it is almost perfect. Mechanically it was sound and the interior was also perfect. Those were my main 2 areas of concern that had to be right. Bodywork + wheels are easily sorted.

Mine is a Sep 2000 - facelift. It has most options apart from DSP stereo. FBMWSH and 70k miles. I paid £13500, but that was over 2 years ago now. I doubt it would make 10K now. Luckily Im not planning on selling it.
Neil
I bought mine in September for £8150 from a small dealer. 2 owners. March 2001 'Y'. Le Mans Blue, all extras apart from blinds and double glazing, unmarked alloys, new Dunlop rears, FBMWSH (4 green lights still), 108k, years MOT, 9 months TAX. Needs a bonnet respray for stone chips (been quoted about £400).
I looked at a few, including one with less that 45k but this one drove/felt the best - still feels so taught. What clinched it was the history. The guy who owned it previous had it for about 5 years, and always had it serviced at the same dealer. I managed to speak to the Service Manager who knew the car and the owner. He confirmed the car has wanted for nothing and was mainly used to travel from Norfolk to Wales (hence the mileage), also he had a few other performance cars.... this was the daily mileage muncher.
Just to be 100% sure I also had a pre-purchase inspection and diagnostic check done at my local Indy (PMW Chelmsford) who confirmed that apart from low'ish rear brake pads and a pending coolant/ brake fluid change, the car was a good'un.
I had been looking seriously since June and alot of the cars I saw in the adverts are still for sale, the common denominator appears to be; no Satnav, non black leather interior, non standard alloys, fettled cars, chequered history. Bear this in mind, just in case you ever want to sell it.
However, after having driven mine for over 2000 miles I can confirm this is the best car I've ever owned and it will be going to grave!

Mine is 164k miles, Sterling Silver 02 plate, black leather, no nav, AC type III split rims, bought for £27k 3 1/2 years ago with 58k on the clock.
Clutch replaced at 60k (warranty), other than that its had tyres, brakes, new discs at 130k, regular servicing, new chain guides(just done), still on original shocks, exhaust etc...
Probably worth about £5k max, but I ain't selling it!

I have nothing but envy for somebody who has covered over 100k miles in 3.5 years in an M5. You lucky thing!Clutch replaced at 60k (warranty), other than that its had tyres, brakes, new discs at 130k, regular servicing, new chain uiges (just done), still on original shocks, exhaust etc...

Note the consensus: unsellable/at least not worth selling.
My bodywork is perfect having had the thing totally resprayed by an approved bodyshop but internally resembles Vespasian's undergarments.
Do I care? Not remotely.
Unlike the E34 variant, this M5 appears to be a far safer punt for £9-13k.

Interesting points lads. Theres a 51 plate, black, with 90k miles for £8999 on the autotrader site maybe worth a look. Funny mustard yellow leather though. Maybe why it seems cheap for a 2002 car.
It's been sold. The interior was interesting, and I was going to go have a look to see if it was liveable with, but it has already gone
There is a nice, enthusiast owned M5 for sale, listed on the M5board
