Chaps,

I have been unduly dismissive of the various claims of low-mid 20s mpg from the V10 5.0 meisterwerk.

I was totally wrong and retract my sceptisism wholeheartedly; sorry lads.

Just taken mine back to the stealers (would you believe water ingress in t'boot causing all manner of electrical chaos?) and with swmbo bringing up the rear in the old 5 and at a cruise controlled 75-80 on a circa 40 mile, m-way trip, saw the trip figure reach and stabilise at 24.2mpg!!!

I am staggered, having never actually driven in this slightly warm manner for three years but yes, it seems relative frugality even from something so highly strung/tuned is indeed a reality.

I am more than pleasantly amazed.

It's motorway that makes all the difference, my average over around 15K miles in the RS is about 21.4, as 80% of my driving is motorway miles at a steady 80. Drops through the floor when around town though, just like it did in the M.

Got 38mpg in my Z4 M Coupe the other week, in the interests of research you understand.

By the way I don't think I have EVER seen an M6 on the road. Ever. Admittedly I don't do that many miles but I see M5s all the time.

Intruiging.

Der, old man, I did a 200 mile trip on the M40 on Wednesday, cruising at 90 and used half a tank. I make that 25 mpg.

Diesel shmiesel.

I think I've managed 21mpg in the Zed but my right foot only knows two positions and one of those is for braking.

Might be missing somehting here, but at any given speed, shouldn't a V10 M5 consume fuel at about the same rate as any other 5 series with a petrol engine (allowing for wirder tyres and suchlike variables)?

They should do...but they don't. They are not built, or known for their economy.

Over 73k in the M6 now and my average is still 22.7. This is mostly 7th gear motorway but with a section of A43, from M1 to M40, in the 203 mile weekly commute to the office.

Stop all this yibber yabber about MPG. My M6 is currently showing an average of 13.5mpg. Even this is a bit girly and I intend to reduce it.

I'll have to conceed that one. It was below freezing this morning when I left home and it's Range Rover all the way. M6 tucked up nice and warm in her garage.
