Hi,

I have just bought an 06 plate M5 and found that the warranty is about to expire. I have the option of BMW extended warranty for £77 a month (£924 for 12 months) or Warranty Direct who have quoted me £800 for the year and a month for free. The policy covers up the value of the car but I noticed there are some items excluded. The exclusions lists seems to have a lot on it!!

Thoughts / suggestions?

Exclusions:-

The following components are strictly excluded within
any of our policies:

Bodywork
All bodywork, trim, upholstery, glass, paint, sunroof
components, panels, wheels and tyres.

Brakes
Brake discs and drums, brake pads and shoes.

Clutch
Clutch centre/friction plate, cover plate and
release bearing.

Contaminated Fuel
The cleaning or unblocking of fuel lines, filters,
carburettors, pumps, metering units or idle speed
control valves.

Electrics
Lamps, batteries, fuses, and connectors, in-car audio
and entertainment systems or navigational systems.

Alarms & Immobilisers
Not factory fitted by the vehicle manufacturer as part
of the vehicle’s original specification.

Service Items
Distributor cap, rotor arm, condenser, points, high
tension leads, spark plugs, wiper blades, filter elements,
bulbs, belts, antifreeze, fluids, grease, fuel or oils.

Miscellaneous
Exhaust gasket, exhaust pipes, catalytic converter,
auxiliary drive belts, brackets, mountings, pipes and
hoses, water ingress, cables other than clutch cables.
Oil Seals and Gaskets
Oil leaks that do not necessitate the removal of the
engine, gearbox/drive unit or differential unit to carry
out repairs.

Casings
Casings are covered provided they have been
damaged as a direct or indirect result of failure of an
insured part.

Sundries
Sundries such as coolants, lubricants, fluids, oils,
filters and other working materials are not covered
unless their replacement is necessitated due to a
valid claim and the vehicle

IMO i would go with the BMW one these other companies tend not to pay full labour rate (main dealer) and also try and get out of any claim and take ages to pay out, just my experience.

Absolutely, definately, positively get the BMW warranty.

It is fantastic and no questions asked whereas you alwyas have to argue with the 3rd party warranties. There is alot to go wrong with the e60 m5 and most of it very expensive to fix so much safer to go with BMW.

BMW warranty. Don't leave home without it (trust me I know what I'm talking about).

Hi,

Yes I did try searching but it brought back a lot of messages, none of which seemed to answer my questions!

Thanks, think I might go with BMW.

EXACTLY!

Can I ask -

You have just spent £30k plus on a car, and you are thinking about scrimping and moving to a third party warranty for the sake of a few quid and a month for free?

You will have a shock when you see the petrol consumption and your missus thinks you are living at your local Shell garage smilesmilesmile lol

Not scrimping, just don't want to pay over the odds for something the same. BMW don't even do the warranty anymore, it's a 3rd party company they use now.

I'm quite happy with my current 17.9 MPG, expected a lot worse!!!

Your not trying hard enough when i had mine it would get below 10mpg alot!!! As for BMW not doing the warranty thats always been the case as far as i was aware, trust me they never question any claim (within reason) and you sometimes get goodwill. Please go BMW route you will regret it if you don't!!!

Put it this way, I'd happily pay £1500 a year for the BMW warranty as it is THAT good smile

I have had 3 M3's, a CSL and now this M5 and have always had stuff sorted. The only warranty better is OPC Porsche in my experience wink

Just spoken to the sales person at Warranty Direct, they say the main difference with their policy is they cover wear and tear, BMW don't?

WD = £800, £50 excess
BMW = £762, £250 excess

Warranty Direct will not pay main dealer prices, if something goes horribly wrong you will end up with your pride and joy in a UNIPART garage and YTS people fixing it, FACT.

I had a Warranty Direct policy on a Corrado years ago and when the starter motor went they refused to let me get it done in VW, after a lot of arguing it went in but I had to contribute towards the cost!

Looking at the list of exclusions that sounds like rubbish.
Tyres, exhaust, brakes, clutch are surely all wear and tear.

I nearly got duped recently and purchased the warranty direct policy - then I came to my senses and cancelled it within 30 days and took out a BMW warranty with £100 excess for £95 a month.

My car is going in on friday with a list of things to be sorted out, so I'll find out very soon whether the BMW warranty is all its cracked up to be !!!

This is reason enough not to go with them, they've told you a load of crap already. No warranty covers wear and tear items, even a brand new car doesn't cover this. If they did, every idiot would be doing burnouts and full bore starts side stepping the clutch before jumping on the brakes, then getting new tyres, clutch and discs/pads fitted under warranty every couple of months. However, a decent policy will cover brake calipers against seizing etc, pads/discs and other "wear and tear" items are never covered.

The £250 excess eh? Mine's due about now. What made you go for the higher excess over the more exspensive option?

Firstly: BMW warranty is the only option. You could probably save a lot mroe just by not having to do any paperwork and send receipts.

Secondly: How the hell are you getting 17.9 MPG? That's TWICE as much as I manage!
