Yes they all sound like a diesel at idle when cold, they should sound less diesel-esque but still "rattly" at idle when warmed up.

If you think you have excessive noice take it to a dealer and ask them to check on it or compare it to another E60 M5.

You might also want to open the bonnet and have a listen if there is more noise coming from one side of the engine than the other this could be indicative of a VANOS problem, I had this problem a year or two ago there's more information on it here

Mine (which was an 08 car) didn't sound anything like a diesel. And certainly nothing like the car that Tiff complained about.

thanks for the advice and interesting to discover that some are quieter than others - I'll have a good listen tonight and report back tomorrow.

its on the list of things for the dealer to look at on friday, but i wanted to learn a bit more about it before i get the statement - "they all sound like that sir"

agree, sounds nothing like a diesel- however, not sure it sounds like a 5l v10 either!! Touch the throttle though and it sounds great. The m3 v8 sounds pretty good, Might even prefer it to the v10

Mine did. and when showing it off to a mate, he actually asked if it was a diesel.
Unsurprisingly my M6 sounds the same

What kind of RPM do the V10s tick over at from cold? The V8/10 Baaaarrrrrrr from a "normal" wailing supercar engine can be due to a relatively high cold start tickover.

The E39 M5 V8's sound like this as well, if you go on to Youtube and search Vanos, you can hear lots of examples (M3's as well). Some are much worse than normal which does indicate a worn Vanos if the noise is still evident at higher revs. Also see www.drvanos.com

yes I'm aware of the valve overlap on startup making a noise which surpresses when warm and is totally normal, but there shouldn't be a "marbles in a can" Vanos rattle when warmed up from either cylinder bank. Checked mine when warm last night and it is noisy on both banks and especially so on the drivers side bank of cylinders which suggests a problem. The noise is also evident at higher revs and not just at idle. Basically it sounds like a diesel when idling even when warm, which is not right.

I know for a fact that they don't all sound like that as I acosted another M5 owner in a petrol station recently and after a lengthy explanation we popped his bonnet and no Vanos rattle. He thought I was nuts as first and it didn't help as I was driving my wifes car and not the M !!

I suspect many other E60 M5 owners are living with the Vanos noise and think it is normal just because Tiff and Jezza mentioned a noise on startup when cold when they reviewed the M5 initially - I suspect the noise they heard on startup when cold was the valve overlap and not knackered Vanos units.

It is in with dealer as we speak so hopefully they will diagnose correctly and I will report back soon.

I didn't really like the v8 that much when I tested it, but was blown away by the v10. I'm still missing mine. It's sad that the new m5 won't have the v10; a blown v8 just doesn't sound right for the m5.

Well, I started a special edition M3 and it sounded really good. I did not drive it and it was under a roof - therefore it may have enhanced the sound. Mind you, it sounded really good!

They sound "rough" because they are programmed to run at maximum valve overlap when cold, to get the cats up to temperature as quickly as possible.... thus reducing emmisions!

In other words, they all do that.
Ours doesn't biggrin
