When you put the car in gear, the rear wheels seem to snatch and clonk.

Car was in a rear ender that forced rear wheel inwards.

Diff has been changed.

It seems to be both wheels.

Any other ideas?

Sounds like the prop might have damaged the box. Flicking the lever into gear should not make any kind of noise or motion as the clutch will be disengaged.
