why would the 535D (not M) be better to drive than an M5 other than in the mind of a disappointed man who couldn't afford or wasn't allowed an M5?

The 535D M-Sport is more economical than the M5, thats the only advantage other than the obvious associated lower ownership costs.

Owned both & all the 535D caused was my desire to very quickly buy an M5. Don't get me wrong though, the 535D is a great car, but it will never be an M Car.

no

its a diesel ( admittedly with lots of torque)

where it would be better is if you wanted a quick car to do 40k a year in. Then I would have one as when I had my E60 M5 I did question the ratioanle of banging up and down the M4 in it.

However the 7 speed box, 500HP and V10 answered that question for me.

Friendly bunch on here arent you?...i think it was a genuine question wasnt it?I think the OP wanted to know if doing 8mpg in an m5 was worth the not so great extra performance over a chipped 535d that could achieve about 4 times that economy.

An M5 will spank a chipped 535d like a red headed stepchild

Off topic but there's an e60 'M5' round here thats actually a 535d. He must be really confused about which one's better to drive.

Reg plate ME51 MET to name and shame wink

Actually round here (Chigwell) I regularly see 4 e60 M5's, 3 are fake frown

M-Style in Romford have a lot to answer for. But more pointedly why don't BMW take action? Either for fake body parts or by tighter control of the supply of bits, like they tried with the CSL.

For the record, yes we know an M5 is quicker and we also know its

(a) a lot harder to fuel
(b) hard to insure
(c) costs £20000 more to buy
(d) depreciates heavier
(e) has a naff gearbox

[quote=golfer99]Thinking of buying a Chipped 535M Sport Diesel how does the torque stack up against the BMW M5 E60

Get the touring 535d Msport. It's great and goes from 90-130 in the blink of an eye... Give or take a bit.

Chipped? I asked about chipping mine on here some time ago and someone pointed out if the warranty would be upheld (don't believe all that is said about flashing the memory and BWM not being able to tell). Additionlly, is the gear box able to handle the extra power?

It's not an M5, but it is a hell of a car!

Why would they care? They'll be flogging loads of parts at the 'M premium'.

(a) Not really? The fuel flap opens in the same manner as the 535d, plus there's usually more unleaded pumps than diesel pumps per pertrol station. So id say it's easier to fuel.
(b) Again, not really. Just costs more. (If your over 25)

Devaluation of the ///M brand.

A problem that seems to afflict mostly M5's since M3's have flared arches and new panels all round would be too expensive for most chavs.

If you want a brisk, economical saloon, buy a 535d. If you want a ridiculously fast, fun-to-drive saloon, buy an M5.

Don't believe all the bks you read about the gearbox. Spend a day or two with one and decide for yourself. I drive the M5 and the manual Aston every week and I have no complaints about the SMG box in the M5.
