HI I AM THINKING OF SELLING MY E92 M3 AND SWAPPING IT FOR AN E60 M5... I KNOW THE STATS. M5 HAS MORE POWER AND IS FASTER IN A STRAIGHT LINE (M3 IS QUICKER ROUND THE RING).
IN MY OPINION THE M3 IS THE BETTER LOOKING CAR, BUT DO YOU THINK I WOULD BE MAKING A MISTAKE CHANGING IT FOR THE M5 (OLDER & HIGHER MILAGE).
THIS IS THE DILEMMA:

Stupid question: What is your reason? Are you changing just for a change, or do you need the extra space of the M5? I would say if you're bored of the M3 you need an inbetween car; then have an M5 in a few years & you'll remember all you loved from the M3 & won't compare the two too critically. (if you're swapping for space, go for an M5 Estate)

WHY IS THAT A STUPID QUESTION?
SPACE IS A BONUS, BUT THE 4 DOORS IS WHAT IM AFTER, BUT I COULD JUST GO FOR THE 4 DOOR M3...?

Just my 2p worth.

M5 is due a replacement in approx a year so values will follow previous M5 ..... lead baloon style.

M3 is dynamically a better car and should retain value for longer.

4 door M3 would be a better propisition in my eyes.

Have you considered a DCT box in the M3 saloon?
You can swap over your Eisenmann from the copue to the saloon.
Downside no carbon roof on the saloon.

Hey if you want to get rid of the Eisenmann I will take it off your hands for you wink

i tried that, and it was ok, nice sound and looks great. But it lacked the fun and silly speed of the M cars (due to the 4wd imo) and compared to the M3 it felt slower. I tried the C63 AMG too, awsome sound, but too expensive, historically high depreciation and greedy...

Okay, another stupid question: why do you need 4 doors; I have two kids & an M6. I could understand if you said you needed a bigger boot & in which case: M6!!

I would take the XFR to a drive - they sound brilliant.

But it's a jag. Won't its value drop like a brick?

Fair comment Neil and I've not exactly been too careful with the pennies, but I just think that, with the XFR being fairly a new model and used values being about £50k or just under, they have a long way to fall by the time that the new m5 comes out, at which point the XFR will look like an ol' dog, IMHO.

I have driven the new xfr and to be honest it really is an epic car. Felt well screwed together, the interior is a really nice place to be and the performance was all you would expect it to be.

Two things put me off;

1) It still feels like a bit of an old mans choice
2) It will depreciate like all jags, ie like a stone

Jaguar dont have a huge performance model history as the M division I know. The XJR, XKR, XJS V12 etc we mediocre and maybe the XFR is just the first real 'effort' by Jaguar so it is being well received.

As the E60 is really 2003/04 technology, things have moved on now but it like trying to take on the champ. If it can be better than an M5 then there is no greater ackolade IMO.

I understand what your saying, if the new M5 is just as ground breaking as the E60 was at launch then it will firmly hold top spot for some time to come. I think these flagship models are effectivley leap frogging each other with up to date technology, performance, equipment etc but Im confident that after the supposedly 'luke warm' reception of the E90 M3, the XFR and other Mercedes offerings BMW will want to firmly stamp their authority and flex their king of the hill muscles.
If they dont then it will be dissapointing.

Yes I agree with you, one the new M5 comes out attention will be off the XFR as the one to have and all reviews will be on the side of the BMW...and yes, the XFR will see its depreciation accelerate.

XJR's and S Type R's were great cars, and at many times competed very favourably with M and AMG competitors.

But the feel of an XFR will be far less 'sporty' than an M. Come to that, even an M3 saloon with its slighly higher driving position and I think as standard quieter exhaust will feel a little less sporty than the M3 Coupe.
