E60 M5 - cost of ownership

I'm pondering an e60 M5, and would be buying used, with, say 40-60k on the clock, and outside the 3-year warranty period.
Are they huge money-pits?
How much is the extended warranty and is it worth it?
How close to the 20mpg combined figure would you get in lazy commuting conditions sitting at 50-70? (i don't care whether it does 3mpg when i'm booting it)
Should I wait 2 years and buy an XFR?

Hail & Schnell.
I have just bought a 2006 M5 with 38k miles on it. I purchased a warranty from BMW without the breakdown option and it was slightly over £700 for 12 months, the cover doesn't start until 1 month after you take the policy out so be careful if you buy a car without it. I have a written statement from the garage to say if anything happened within the first month they will pay the bill. I have read on here that a gearbox issue can run to £20-30k, ouch.
MPG, I drive to work and back 2 days a week and on the motorway it will happily do low 20's, but with driving to and from the motorway my combined average is 16-17mpg. I was quite shocked that the first few tanks of fuel do around 170 miles from full before the light comes on, but then again the light comes on with 60 miles remaining (1/4 tank). I would think with a good motorway run you'd get 30 mpg.
I think that answers your questions, anything else just ask!

Cost will depend on your mileage. If you do a few thousand a year then they will be as cheap as chips- do 20k then you are looking at big bills. I have found it cheaper than e46m3 because it has conditional based servicing. Easy to achieve 20mpg with mixed driving.
I would buy a warranty, but I would for any prestige performance car. They seem very reliable though, more so than many cars with similar performance- lambos! Fezza!

Had my M5 for just over two months now and I love it. Got an indianapolis red one from a dealership, obviously this has the dealer applied warranty (june 06 car) and it has been in the workshop already for an aircon issue which was supposedly resolved with a code update but still doesn't seem resolved so is back in on friday.
Having trouble getting more than 14mpg though and that is with a 50/50 town/motorway mix. Is pretty quick though
. Okay, it is stupid fast for a comfortable big saloon
. Tank range is a bit of a pig and so far other than fuel I have no idea what the maintenance will run me to (do 20k a year) but I have owned E46 M3s for the past three and a half years so am not a stranger to the ///M tax
.
The noise of the V10 is intoxicating and the shove when you boot it at 40mph in second is breathtaking.
A great car, if you have an itch big enough then scratch it.

Young Ashok there had £30k worth of warranty work to his E60 M5 on mainly the gearbox. The inconvienience made him sell it and buy a diesel
£30k for gearbox work!!!!!????
Are you sure they didn't add a "0" at the end by mistake??
