E34 M5. What to look out for?
Discussion
All. I've just started looking around for a second hand E34 M5. Hence signing up to PH to get some advice as a friend recommended the site forums to get some sound advice.
My search is on for an example with 80-100k on the clock and a budget of about £11k at the maximum to find a mint motor. Not really to concerned about the age of the car but this is where I want to appreciate if this will make a real difference......are there any glitches that can be found in earlier editions that got ironed out at all?

I have heard that the EDC is prone to go wrong on a E34.
Why do you not consider the white M5 featured in the monthly BMWcar Magazine.

And its cheap! Just get the back issues of the car magazine and read about the problems and joys that come with owning a M5.

If you want to know ANYTHING about e34 M5s then get yourself over to http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e34-m5-discussion...
To answer your question...yes, there are lots of things you need to look out for whether your spending £3k or £11k.
- rust around filler cap
- rust along bottom of doors
- suspension mount cracks
- leaking suspension
- failed but not leaking suspension
- not had valve adjustments
- electrical problems
- misfires / lumpy idling
- early 3.6s had a poor crank damper design
- brakes on the earlier cars were not particularly suitable for the weight of the car
- etc.
You could give Darjac Racing a call - in Earls Colne, Essex (07807 589538 / 01787 223644) - as he's the guy who looked after my two, and also looks after a lot of others, including one that's going through a full restoration - although it's being insured for £30k with back-up documentation from the engineer doing the restoration and the BMW Car Club.
BTW, you can do everything possible to buy a car that's working perfectly, and stil end up with something that needs a rebuild or new suspension a few months down the line.
I do know of someone selling a 1995 Rosso Red LE version though.

Ah I see. Well I don't balem him. I think the E34 has finally had its day.
The main reason is he had 4 cars and doesn't need that many for the miles he does. One car is too small for the driving trips he does with the wife, the other is too old (not the M5) but is quite capable on track, the 3rd is the wife's A2 (need to keep that for now) and the M5 just doesn't get used as much as it should. So he decided to sell the 3 'part time' cars and get one that can do the job of the 3 he's replacing.
