I pass your car quite often on the way to work but yesterday I heard you open the taps near Cookham, and it sounded amazing. Is it a 540i with a Supercharger as I thought i heard v8 with a slight whine on top. I was in the black impreza Sti.

Am I correct in saying there were no genuine E39 M5 estates?

nono

I understand that 'M5 EST' is indeed the real deal; a labour of love and huge expense.

LM Blue is it not?

M5 EST is essentially an e39 M5 Touring with all the proper bits! BMW did make one of two genuine e39 M5 Tourings but they were never officially released. A few people have built up M5 Tourings from written-off M5's however as has already been said it's an enormous job and a real undertaking. You can see more on M5 EST here: http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e39-m5-e52-z8-dis...

Indeed very real.. I thought I ruled the roost locally on the E39 Touring front until I followed M5 EST down the A4 & had a natter with the owner and a look under the bonnet at the Texaco garage by Maidenhead Riverside.

A brilliant job, love it!

Hi there,

The car you mention and the link provided by the other poster is indeed a labour of a lot of work indeed! I've been lucky enough to speak with the owner as I also have an E39 Touring and we compared notes.

The car is as near to an 'official' E39 M5 Touring as one can get. It involved a dead M5 which was bought back to life by transplanting it into a 540i Touring shell. It's a major mission of a project and not one to be taken lightly! We spoke at length about various bits and pieces as I had spotted it around my way about a year previously!

There have been a couple of similar modifiers who've done the same conversion, based in the USA mainly I beleive. I've also had the good fortune to speak and ride in a 427bhp Dinan modified E39 540i Touring upon a recent business trip to Las Vegas & Los Angeles. That car is just something else and with that kind of power, is quicker (marginally!) than an M5 and the mighty Alpina B10 V8S.

E39 Tourings are fantastic as well as the other incarnations of BMW Tourings, becoming more popular nowadays as well. My own is a 2003 3.0 Diesel and I'm considering a 300BHP conversion to it. It won't be close to M5 levels of performance, however It'll be quick enough and return me 35+ MPG when needs be

I'm hoping to catch M5 EST (I'm also pretty sure that was the normal 'letter, number(s) and 3 letters style plate you can buy) and the owner Steve, soon again (as per the M5board mega thread, I'm sure Steve doesn't mind having his name mentioned here!)

Also, really liking the Pistonheads community here!

Cheers, Dennis! West London & Slough UK!

Thanks for posting the link to the build thread guys. The attention to detail is fantastic and that explains what's under the bonnet. You'd never guess there was a 98 e39 shell attached to all that m5 running gear.

Hi Rags,

Thanks for the positive comment and feedback there - appreciated smile

Once I have a little more time with all that I'm currently very busy doing, I shall be putting up some pictures and descriptive input for PH'ers to see and provide valuable feedback and comments on.

I also need to speak to Steve to catch up with him about a few bits!

Cheers, Dennis! West London & Slough UK!
