Never seen this mentioned in any threads about the e39 but have seen a few cars specced with it. Is there any reason to avoid double glazed cars? Any real benefit in having it?

It is just suppose to be quieter when driving. Cant see the point myself.

You could tell your mates its bullet proof.

Compared to my previous E39 530d (single glazing), my E39 M5 (double glazing) is substantially quieter in terms of wind noise and drive-by noise, so yes, certainly worth it for me! Can't see any disadvantages, except if you had to replace the windows (apparently rather expensive) but then again, my insurance covers glass too.

Agree with Rassi. It makes a big difference and if you go down the exhaust route you can at least block it out when your not in the mood.

Cheers chaps. There aren't many options/specs that I am deliberately looking out for when I make a purchase but I did want to make sure that there isn't something I should avoid. Sounds like double glazing is pretty good though if I stumble upon a car that has it.

Hedgetrimmer, don't suppose you're around this weekend?

I would have thought it does add a fair bit of extra weight. I have heard reports of condensation forming between the panes of glass although I don't think it is that common.

Apparently the weight difference is about 2.5 lbs per window, so not really noticeable.

I am certainly happy to sacrifice 0.001 second from 0-60 mph for the added comfort + the double glazing is also meant to be very effective as security glazing as in very difficult to break (of course not bullet proof, but more against smash & grab incidents)

Yeah I will be around at the weekend. Just give me a shout later in the week through PM.
