Most owners today are moving across to Castrol Edge 10w-60 which seems to last longer along with having a better heat breakdown. Check the bodywork for shut lines, look under the car when on a ramp at the suspension and steering setup, beware of the cats on the exhausts and check the brake disks and pads along with tyre wear. otherwise it is the usual stuff, bills, a regular service history and general wear and tear upon the inside. Dashborad pixels also fail but are easily replaced. Get ready for big tyre bills and big fuel bills if doing commuer mileage or have a heavy right foot.

I bought one in September --- absolutely love it.
Took it for its first oil service - cost about £170
Also went through the diagnostics --- will need new break discs & pads in the next 3 months --- very small leak from rocker gasket cover(not a huge problem they said - please correct me if I am wrong!!!). and blower pipes need replacing -- apart from that in good nick.
Fuel is pretty bad driving in town -- I average 18mpg - but do like to floor it....its never going to be cheap really.....oil consumption not too bad - mine is a 1999 with about 87K on the clock...

I wouldnt buy a prefacelift model personally. Not when, for a small amount more, you could have a facelifted version.

vanos oil feed
piston rings
headlamps
steering wheel
16:9 satnav
front+rear PDC
far less oil consumption

I'm sure there are others.

I would imagine something to do with the turbo.

Hi there

M5's don't have turbochargers. Neither does the E60 M5. The next generation F10 M5 which'll probably debut 2012 is currently rumoured to be a twin turbo unit.

I also, am not fully up to speed as to what 'blower pipes' could be!

Cheers, Dennis! West London & Slough UK!

That's why I asked, I know they don't have T/C's

They dont? laugh

The only thing I can think he means are the crank/plenum oil return pipes. They are rubbish and crack quite badly. Easily replaced with a stronger one although not essential.

Probably meant "breather" hoses... which as Neil.D says are rubbish and also go squidgy and basically fall apart.

excuse my ignorance, but where exactly are these pipes located and do you get any failure codes if they are screwed? also, how much is an average cost to fix?

No you wont get any fault codes or running problems. The pipes run from the oil separators at the front of the plenum just by the dip stick. The other one is opposite this. If they are persished they will tear when you pull at them. IIRC they were £15 or so for the pair.

Many thanks Neil that is just what I was after. Did you find the part number from realoem or just ask for "breather pipes" at your local dealership service desk?
