So the manual says preferred viscosity 10W-60 or alternatively 10W-40, 5W-50 or 10-W50 - and BMW recommends Castrol.

Popped into Halfords on the way home and the only option from Castrol or Mobil range was a 10W-40 Magnatec product. But they also do a Castrol Edge Sport for high perfomance engines but not in any of these viscosities.

They do have a Halfords own brand 5W-50 for track days and high performance engines.

I decide to pass on these options and try the BP garage as I need some oil urgently. No luck there either.

Where do you guys buy your oil and do you follow the recommendation strictly?

The only oil for today's M engines is Castrol Edge 10w-60.....DO NOT USE THE SPORT!

You can buy this pretty cheaply on line from Opie oils, but it can be found elsewhere. Just be warned that it is not cheap but is a wonderful product.

Mine was towards the low marker on the display - i too tried to get some from Halfords but no luck - so went to a stealer expecting to get shafted but was surprised when a - it cost about 12 quid for a litre and b - it took only 1/2 litre to fill it to the top marker on the display...
