Is the E60 M5 that much better than the E39 M5?
Discussion
Having recently purchased an E39 M5 I am wondering is the E60 M5 really worth 15K more (some cars now available for < 25K)?
I sold a 54 plate E61 530D for the E39 M5 and the M5 is in another league for performance.
Would an E60 M5 be a big step up or would it feel only marginally quicker than the E39 M5?
Anyone made the move?

I found my 530D a lot more refined, and my wife feels like the M5 is a step down rather than up!
She does not appreciate the handling power etc, just says that that the old car seemed nicer.
Hence my interest in the E60 M5, the same quality feel as my old 530D just far quicker, better handling etc.
I have only had the E39 M5 for a couple of months and already getting itchy feet.
I think I need a test drive of the E60 to see if the extra cost is justified.
Wife says I can have one as long as she gets a new kitchen...

The E60 will feel stiffer and newer of course, but will you like SMG and the 5+mpg less fuel consumption, depreciation and you will also need a cast iron warranty to protect your wallet. She does not appreciate the handling power etc, just says that that the old car seemed nicer.

The E39 is as quick upto 100mph and the bottom end torque will always be more useful on UK roads-Not autobahns though!
I dont abide by car mags but Evo prefer the E39 everytime, but you really have to make your own decisions as you may well prefer the E60.
I would always go for the e39. Its a much more involving car to own and plus nice ones are now appearing to hold their money.
Theres no doubt that the e60 is a great car but the shear size, no manual gearbox option, questionable styling and not many people out side of BMW who can work on them means the e39 will always be the one for me.

Sheer size? It's the same bloody size and weight!
They are both great cars. I had a great afternoon a couple of summers ago with a like-minded E39 owner. The E60 is a lot faster.
If you want a considered view, wait for derestrictor who owns an M6, E39 M5 and an Alpina B5.

I was at the Nurburgring last year, and was lucky enough to have a ride in the Ring Taxi.
Our driver was a BMW development driver, and we asked him this very question. His opinion was that there wasn't much in it, with the E60 being marginally quicker.
He of course is talking about flat out laps of the Nurburgring, how that translates to real world driving I'm not sure.

My e39 will show a e60 a clean pair of heels all day, but it has been played with. I was out a lot with an e60 before modifying and it is not in a different league.
My M5 has had a lot of work done by Nowack which cost a previous owner 24,000 Euro. I am not sure if this was their N500 conversion or not.
I would like to get mine on a dyno to see what power it is making.
It is certainly very quick

Both great cars... I driven both. The E60 is faster but I found the E39 more fun to drive and more involving. Also I find the interior quality is better on the E39. My wife has an E60 535 touring ans see thinks the same. But as I say both brilliant...Depends what you want really.
Kathleen Turner v Angelina Jolie (feel free to substitute names
).Kathleen Turner was good, is good and will remain a classic.

Totally different league! It will beat the old one hands down in every department.
Not accoriding to most people or road tests where they are directly compared!Everytime the E39 comes out on top of the newer cars.

Surprised, I always thought the E60 was bigger than the E39 as well, just going on looks. E60 60kg heavier (negligible I admit)They are both great cars. I had a great afternoon a couple of summers ago with a like-minded E39 owner. The E60 is a lot faster.

E39: 478 cm/180 cm/ 1790 kg
E60: 486 cm/185 cm/ 1850 kg
I would say that's a fair difference?
