Just got my Z4MR this afternoon and I can report it is utterly awesome!!!!! Coming from a 231bhp RX8, I have been very nervy and little bit scared all these days waiting to collect the car after hearing about how raw the performance of the car would be and all those comments about it being a modern TVR etc. I was suspicious about how well it will drive and if it will come close to the driving experience of my RX8 (which is one good hell of a car to drive)and whether I can live with it. Well, after a couple hours of driving back thru traffic etc from the dealership, i can report on the following:

1. The noise is intoxicating and with the roof down, pure jap porn (my fav)
2. I did not have to change my driving style as I drive it the same way as the RX8. It might be because they both are high reving engines.
3. Gear changes especially the widely reported difficulty of entering 2nd gear is in my point of view not more difficult than the RX8. The trick for a smooth change during normal driving from 1st to 2nd is to rev higher in 1st gear to say about 4000rpm and grabbing 2nd gear quickly. (same method i use for RX8) It needs a bit of skills and timing to get right but that is what driving a sports car is all about.
4. The suspension and damper setting in my opinion is very acceptable for a sports car and in my opinion no worse than the RX8. I can totally live with that it definitely won't break your back
unless you fall into a big hole.
5. the seating position is very different and lower than the RX8 and pointing the long front end thru tight gaps can be a challenge but this completely changes when you pick up some speed as the feel from the front tyre increases and i find myself throwing the car into corners as if i am driving a cheap civic.
6. I don't need to mention how great this power plant is do I? it has to be the best ///M engine ever build of all time.
7. I also don't need to mention what going from 231bhp to 343bhp feels like in a straight line but i haven't dared take a corner seriously yet. and also, haven't touched the sports button yet.
7. I had the roof down all the time and i didn't stop laughing and smiling until i got home. The people on the side of the road must have thought I am mad.

For those who had doubts about owning a Z4M, I can honestly say you can go ahead and buy with no regrets. ABSOLUTELY ///M'ed!!!!

Glad you like it smile

The Z4M R is a real pussycat to drive but can change as you wish ! The power delivery is linear like the RX8 but just much more smile

The gearchange is the only downside as far as I am concerned ... but then I did come from a DSG Golf GTi ....

The rest is brilliant - enjoy !!

I guess a few E9X or E60 owners might have some views on the best engine.....

Dude,
If you drive it like your RX8. It won't be long before you loose your liscense. With M engines you don't need to do this. It's got plenty of power without the need to rev past the 6k.

Losing my licence is certainly a bigger risk now than ever, but after driving it this morning to work again, i have discovered more depth to the car. In normal mode, the power delivery is smoother than the RX8 and throttle input is much easier to control. I think this due in part to more torque down the rev range compared to the RX8. its been such a delight again this morning no matter going slow or fast. will have the roof down on my way home this afternoon when its warmer.

Im going to have the same problems when I pick my M5 up tomorrow.

Going from a RX8 which is much lighter and likes to be thrashed to a M5 with 170bhp more and much heavier and large (not to mention the torque) is going to be interesting.

What amazed me was the throttle travel on the M5. Just pushing it halfway down in second was awesome.

I think with the RX8 I knew the limits in the dry, going to take some time to get anywhere near in the M5. Cant wait.

Enjoy your Z4 M.

968,

Going from the RX8 to the M5, one thing you will be use to is the fuel consumption. But hey, its an epic car and that V10 is worth every single penny. For me, its too expensive to run in the London and hence.... sigh

However, if i get this job in the middle east next week, i will definitely get an M5 there. hehe

all the best with the M5 and make sure you report on your experience. Will be interesting.

i suppose one will find the manual awkward if coming from a DSG or auto but hey, practice makes perfect. The challenge of driving a car is what makes it interesting and fun for me.

Cheers, will do. Going to get it a clean bill of health tomorrow and then I can have fun.

Its the V8 (cant afford a V10) but I reckon at a steady cruise the MPG should be better than the RX8. Mind you, I think the first few weeks are going to be shocking while I get used to it.

Removing the CDV (clutch delay valve) improves gearchanges all around but especially the troublesome 1st to 2nd.

It's a small valve between the master and slave cylinders and is easily removed (some say you can modify them but I didn;t bother).

My local indy charged me £50 to remove which is about a half hour of labour plus fluid to bleed, it's made a massive difference.

Darren.

This man makes a good point to 6K it is a very quick car, beyond that it gets fast, not the very fast, but more than necessary for deployment in real world licences and all that....

enjoy the car... I've at 46.5k with 23k done in the last 20 months.... wonderful.... and now summer is here roof down.....enjoy 2010!

Simples question...

Does the CDV cause a slipping clutch when being a but agressice off the line?

.... but why would you want to miss out on that noise? There are loads of occasions where an overtake would be perfectly possible by short shifting 3rd, 4th, 5th and finally 6th, but that engine just rewards sooooo much by tackling opportunities like that by wringing a gear out to the shift light cloud9

I thought that too. That's the whole point of the S54 engine and the car - the fun (and noise) is taking it up to red line, not pootling about below 6000, even if there is sufficient thrust for 'normal' driving below there.

Sunny day, roof open, open road in front of you, left paddle downshift flick (*) , revs blip and rise to instant response zone, drop foot, rear squats and squirms and you take-off...hit red line, flick paddle, gear slams home, shoves you forward - and repeat...until the NSL is reached of course cloud9

(*) in SMG M3 anyway, but similar process.

IMHO the potential of the engine is best deployed a) in geographically remote regions b) outside your licence jurisdiction or c) track in that order. But to keep it working and well oiled it needs this done with frequency and vigour - you choose the location.

yes

I was very careful to ensure that I didn't suggest it was acceptable to ring 3rd gear out to the shift light on any public UK road, let alone 4th gear!
