Hi All.
I've trawled the net trying to find out what the smg box does besides the obvious. I managed to discover some stuff on youtube explaing how hillstart assist works ( does it work in reverse? ) . And also bagload of launch control tutorials ( all of which have some kind of pumpin mix rockin on, do i need that as well? ). There seems to be a mystical s6 mode also but you can only get it in some other mode with dsc off or something. I guess if I knew what s-mode 1-5 was i may have a clue but hey ho !

Would anyone in the know like to fill me in on all that is possible with smg please?

Thanks in advance.

Directly underneath the gearstick you have a button that resembles a volume control, push this on the right hand side and watch the display in the centre of the dashboard until it goes to position 5, this is S5 shift mode. Now, turn off your DSC (traction control) and look at the dash, another option will come available next to S5 which is S6, select this for the fastest gear change smile

Be warned though, depending on what car you have this can be quite a shock, so if you have an M5 do NOT engage this in the wet unless you are a competent driver!

Yup - hill assist works in reverse too.

There is a detailed PDF floating about which lists all of the functions (goes into more detail than the owner's manual). It's on my home laptop so will dig it out later.

One interesting point is that the 'acceleration assist' function has two modes - optimum acceleration and a burnout mode biggrin

If you are talking about the e60 m5;

In i-drive go to M settings menu
Select DSC to OFF
Gear setting S-6 is then available

If you then set dsc to MDM or On the gearbox reverts back to S-5.
