I'm just having the 1200 mile first service done on my M3. Price is just short of £600! Has anyone got experience of this service cost, it's seems huge to me.

They're taking the piss surely. Is this the dealer you bought the car from? If not give them a call and they might do it for free although I don't think they have to. If you have to pay the cost should be more like £400/£450 I believe.

I think they are taking the p*ss.

Can't remember what mine was and can't check until tomorrow evening, but suggest you phone another dealer for a quote.

I paid just under £400 for mine when I had it. Phone round you will certainly get it done for less than £600.

Thank you gentlemen,
armed with your advice I phoned some other dealers and was quoted around the £400 mark. As my car was at the dealer in question already and was on the 1200 mile mark I couldn't go else where so I quoted the other prices and got them down to £450.
It just makes one realise what a con the whole thing is. All I can do is not use that dealer again and go to the one which was kind enough to email me their quote.
Thanks for your help guys.

I would drop a short note to BMW Customer Service informing them of the price the dealer charged and what you were able to negotiate elsewhere. Always worth a try, the guilty party may well apologise and offer you a discount next time.

I have to admit I'm shocked you even have to pay for it! Cheeky feckers.

Mine was free, so should yours be, No way it's £600.00 they are screwing you, go elsewhere.

According to the most helpful of the dealers I spoke to, the first service was free up until quite recently. Not sure when it changed though.

on a £50k car they expect you to folk out £600 on the 1200 mil service? Hmm quite unfair right?

I would assume that first 1,200 mile service is to check if the car is running okay and to see if there is any manufacturing issues? Surely that should be free...

It does include an oil change.

Ah true, well worth the £600 for the service I reckon ;-)

Did I say that?

I think my first service was 'free' - for which read 'included in the purchase price'. The only oil change service I have paid for to date cost £450, of which about £250 was for the oil change. (They charged 9.3 litres at £15.50 plus VAT for the oil).

I think it needs pointing out that all M cars ( to my knowledge ) have a running in service where the oil is changed after 1200 miles from a 'running in oil' to a more regular oil. The running in period allows the engine's internal components to bed in properly. It's fair to say that most M car enthusiasts ( not to mention BMW ) would steer clear of a car that hadn't had this service done in time.

What gets done is the Engine oil and filter and Diff oil changed. Same Oil goes in as came out of the engine, 0-60 grade.

I was looking at a new m3 just on Tuesday. Might be worth looking at but BMW much like mini are now offering 3 yr fixed servicing including m cars for £1k- that Includes running in service so if you plan to keep the car might be worth looking at.

How shocking, my 1200 mile service was gratis from the supplying dealership.
