What does it take to make an E46 M3 sound like a CSL? (i'm guessing induction and exhaust - but specifically which?)

what does it entail in terms of kit and cost?

Anybody got any sound clips of modded M3's making CSL sounds?

If I could replicate the full CSL aural experience I might consider an SMG M3 as my next toy!

Induction (+2k for OEM) and you will need an alpha N remap to remove the MAF and an exhaust, both can be done for less but be careful of st copies. A couple of guys that go to the Guildford meets have them ans they sound amazing

Great idea. Shame they are double the money of a good standard M3

Gruppe M is a good compromise for £700

The Gruppe M kit that CA Automotive advertise is more like £1400. They also advertise this kit, however, for £700. Anyone know what kinds of aural / performance effects such an induction system could have on an E46?

I'm yet to see a system that replaces the airbox right up to the throttle bodies retailing at less than £2500 ish! Does such an "improvement" exist?

The OP wil also require CSL headers, and the titanium exhaust in order to achieve the desired sound.

Can't really see the point though; it's not like the standard car sounds pish or anything.

Hi there,

I do know of one owner who has a genuine CSL airbox on his M3 convertible, was talking with him last night at the Guildford neet in fact!

It does indeed sound awesome, however, I don't personally know too much about it. He obviously does and as I was chatting with him, he made it clear he much prefers the technical aspects to provide function rather than form. Upon initial look at the airbox, it seems the front 'area' is missing, you can peer right into the airbox itself and see the filters (I'm not a mechanic!!) When he started it up, it sounds much more purposely and throaty. I'm not sure of the other mods he's done though.

So it can, and has been done. If you are around the London area, I know he does bring his car to various shows and meets like last night and you can perhaps speak to him more about what he's done.

Cheers, Dennis!

Hi,
I'm in the process of doing the CSL airbox conversion (using an exact copy) with Alpha-N programming on my Z4MC. It's not cheap and the performance gain is relatively small but this is one of the things I miss the most from my ex-CSL experience and had to do it.

I second that! Lets some pics as soon as you install it! I've frequently toyed with the idea of a CSL style intake to get that M3 CSL bark but then i remember how much it costs....

I know that the CSL uses Alpha-N but is that really a pre-req when using CSL-style induction, i.e. is the new airflow so much greater that it's beyond the range of the configurable parameters within the standard M-ECU to cope with it (can't just re-map)?

There is no Mass Airflow Sensor on the CSL intake, hence the Alpha remap to use different parameters ;-) nb if its not a tried a tested remapit will make performance worse!

Fair enough. That would necessitate a different approach then, wouldn't it. I'll just... getmecoat

Strangly I just clicked on to start new thread re making my E46 sound better, not bothered about extra horses and dont want to spend a packet, so do I revise induction or is it exhaust?

Im only after better louder sound.

I've fitted a K and N Typhoon kit. Sounds much better than standard but obviously not as good as a CSL. The filter is oiled so it caused the engine light to come on due to the MAF being dirty. Simply spraying the MAF with electrical cleaner solved that problem and it's a very simple job.
