Attention E36 EVO / ZM Coupe owners VANOS repair
Discussion
I've not seen any mention of http://www.mrvanos.com/ on Pistonheads yet but I thought I'd mention there is a relatively new company gaining a reputation for excellent work on S50B32 vanos. The main man Steve has already received plenty of complentary feedback on the bmowner and Z3MCoupe forums for the quality of his work / attention to detail etc.
The company is based in Darlington but I believe will travel to you if required. They'll also sort out your valve clearances at the same time if needed. Sounds good to me.
Dave.

Considered using Steve to cure a rumbling Vanos on my Evo, spoke with him by e-mail and he seemed to know what he was about, good value as well at around £650 ish, bit of a shame he is based oop north, nice to know he can travel all over the UK though.
I would like to know how he cures the rattle before i parted with any hard earned, i know DR Vanos replace the vanos gears to give a better bearing fit, no mention from steve how he achieves this though.
Considering my system still works fine (just a bit rattly at tickover) and the fact i have a condenser and drier to replace i think it's going to have to wait a bit.

I've no experience of his work but there are some threads with pictures on bmowner.com which give an idea of Steve's serious attention to detail. Dependant upon your own mechanical skills it appears you can either send your vanos to them for reconditioning, buy a repair kit to fit yourself or Steve will visit you to fit a reconditioned unit and take away your suspect unit on an exchange basis.
The website explains, in more detail, regarding the kits and exchange options.

Another alternative to consider for Vanos repairs is Phil Crouch @ CPC Performance Engineering.
He recently stripped and rebuild both vanos units on my e39 M5. He really is an M guru and is held in very high regard. Based near Rickmansworth just off the M25.
I can see Vanos repairs/rebuilds being a lucrative niche market as BMW still appear to be struggling with reliability. There are numerous incidents of vanos failures on new M5's on M5board. To have both my units stripped and rebuilt cost a lot less than half of the cost of a straight replacement for just one unit.
