My brakes seem to be really weak and fade under heavy use, anyone upgraded due to this?

If so how much and any recommended points of contact to go to?

As always advice greatly appreciated.......

Birds can probably offer you something, likewise i'm sure Thorney will have an option for the M5

AP Racing or Stoptech should be your port of call. Both offer effective stopping solutions for the M5.

Try a search on the M5board; it's sure to offer a wealth of information on the subject.

Mov'it I believe do a serious kit that will much increase your stopping power and will never fade....calipers, disks, pads etc.

Just rang Thorney and they said it may just be a case of a pad upgrade, I will go for this first option and get her booked in.

Also do the brake air duct DIY (search M5board) which should reduce brake fade.

You'll have some pretty trick SHW floating discs fitted as standard (unless swapped to single piece)
With good fluid and pads, they should improve, but you won't get a better disc than OEM if you aren't going for a bigger disc conversion.

Very true.

FWIW, I found that the aforementioned pad and fluid upgrade did wonders for braking performance on my old M3.

Unless you're tracking the car regularly (which is what I assumed the OP meant), a simple pad and fluid upgrade should be more than enough on the road - even in something as heavy as the M5.

The AP/Stoptech/Movit upgrade is very effective, but equally expensive.

I've upgraded the front and rear brakes to the Stoptech ST40 BBK and the stopping power is very much improved.

I've got the AP six pot kit on order, I'm going to fit upgraded rear pads and braided hoses on the rear too.

As already mentioned unless you go for a big brake kit the OEM discs are the best option. Before going down that route I would suggest braided hoses, new fluid and a set of EBC yellow stuff pads. You should see a good improvement in performance and a lot less fade.

I upgraded front and rear pads to Axxis Ultimate and they made a significant difference. Much sharper intitial bite. What ever you do, make sure you bed them in as this will improve the stopping power.

As a possible halfway house between stock and a big brake kit how about the BMW performance kit for the E92 M3? It is only good for the front but there is some interesting disucssion about it on m5board http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e39-m5-e52-z8-dis...
Looks like a good compromise for those (like me) who can't justify the cost of a BBK but would like some extra stop.

Just be aware that it is not an E92 M3 upgrade, "only" an E92 upgrade since the diameter of the discs is smaller (338 mm IIRC v 343 mm) than the M5s. Still a worthwhile upgrade for the price, and having had a passenger ride in an M5 that was equipped with this (Frits in the M5board thread) I can guarantee that they are certainly stronger and much less prone to fade than the OEM setup.

yep its a known fact, bmw's go but dont stop too well..would suggest the 6 pot Ap's are the best but even these (from a friend who had some) arnet the best answer. God knows why....

I managed a quarter of a lap the ring before fade stopped play...im on standard brakes....

My old E39 M5 did a whole weekend at the Ring with no brake issues. They were standard and did grumble a little, but never failed to stop the car. Was doing comfortable mid-8 minute laps too, so not exactly hanging about. I guess it just depends on how you use them. The only "mod" that car had was the brake ducts were opened, so they were cooled pretty well. Would love AP 6-pot front and 4-pot rear as a set-up. That would be special. smile

I have not owned a car were the brakes don't fade that includes a Clio 182 and M3, cars seem pretty weak in this area......

I had a Stoptech BBK on my old M5,loads better than standard but still had a couple of "moments" when braking from silly speeds. Damn good brakes though so would def recommend.

Who did you buy your Stoptech BBK from?
