I have the original compressor with my car but it has a use by date of 2003 smilesmile so I very much doubt its going to work.

What do other owners carry in their boot in case of a puncture? Will an off the shelf sealant work?

A big can of tyre weld and a compressor.

I have the compressor and can of tyre sealant, and as far as I'm aware it's the same ones that have been in the car since it was new in 2001.

A couple of years ago BMW suggested that I should change them at a cost of £105, which I politely declined.

No doubt I'll be rewarded for my tightfistedness at the side of some motorway in the pissing rain.

If you can avoid using the sealant, then avoid! The tyre is knackered apparently once this has been used! So I was told with my M3. ?????

The tyre is not knackered, it just needs to be washed all out as tyreweld is corrosive.

I see! I was always worried about using it! So much so I bought a spare alloy and tyre for the unlikely event!!

OK, thanks for the replies. I will check the condition of the compressor and buy some tyre weld.

Worth noting that Tyre Weld is on offer at Tesco's... Was reading the back of the cannister, but it seems such a faff to use it? And you'd need a compressor too? Or could you use the compressor on the (expired) mobility kit?

IIRC, The tyre weld needs unloading into the tyre whilst ensuring the nail or whatever is at the bottom, so gravity does its thing. The can has enough to inflate the tyre to about 75%, you then drive and stop after 5 miles once it has all circulated in there and use the compressor to get back to normal PSI.

I drove about 200meteres with a nearly flat tyre, just whilst I realised what was happening and the rim of the alloy chewed up the inside of the tyre making it unrepairable.

Stupid question coming up. I have full AA cover so if I called them out with a puncture what do they do? Would they recover me to a tyre specialist or do they use tyre weld?

I have only had a puncture on the move once and that was in a AX and I would always change them myself if I had a spare.

Only reason for asking is that we use the car for family outings so I wouldn't want to be stranded for too long with a 5 and 7yr old
