It's yer diff, I'd say.

Mine had it serviced before I brought it, and solved the whine/drone.

I've heard it on other M5's, so it's likely that.

Mine sounds the same. I think its a leak in the intake system somewhere. Do you get a light whine/whistle at light throttle at motorway speeds in top gear. If so it could well be a secondary air system problem, at least thats what I hope mine is!

Alex,

It doesn't sound like the diff to me to be honest. The noise appears to come and go with the increase in engine revs rather than road speed. If it was a diff issue, the noise would be a gradual and ever increasing/decreasing whine from the rear seat dependant on road speed.

It could be the air leak that someone talked about, but I've no experience of that side of things.
