Probably because the wiring for the sensor has been disturbed, or got dirty. Did it come on after moving/ adjusting the seat or after someone sat in the seat heavily?

There is a sensor under the passenger seat so it knows whether to deploy that airbag too in a crash. With people jumping in and out they go faulty after a time. It will need plugging in to confirm this but it is the most common issue.
Iirc it's nearly £100 in the E36 fitted. It was a few years ago anyhoo.

Dodgy sensor pad under the seat cushion

Faulty wiring ESP in back of connector under seat

Connector disconnected under seat

Or maybe seat removed and connector disconnected and reconnected

I've had all these at different times!
