I have a small leak coming from my diff. My BMw specialist tells me that the part i need is not available from BMW as each one of them is matched to the diff so the only option is a rebuilt diff if i want the leak stopped. It's leaking around the area where the prop shaft joins into the diff.
Anyone had it done and if so by who and what was the cost? Maybe there is an upgraded option-if so tell me about that or is the standard one as good as it gets?
Thanks chaps.

Alastair,

I'm sure that what you're describing is just the input seal, which is about £27 from BMW. When I had my M5 I had the imput and both output seals done. It was about £70 in parts and then about 4 hours labour at my local indy. It's a big job as the exhaust system has to come off and often the exhaust header bolts are pigs to remove.

Replacing the seals should sort the leak out. If not, then the only place I know that rebuilds the diff is ACE gearboxes and transmissions in Northampton. Cost me £400 to have an M5 diff rebuilt after the bearing went west in it.

And he's a specialist???

If its an E35, you want the parts in this picture - nos 16, 17 and 18 for the drive shafts, 12, 13, 14 for the propshaft seals.

Not a horrible job if the exhaust can be got out of the way...

If its an E60, you want these parts nos 5, 6 7
