Chaps

Car is at the garage this morning because I was getting brake shudder through the steering wheels. Discs, Pads and bushes appear fine but they are saying that both front wheels are buckled.

I take great care over speeds bumps etc and dont recall anything major happening. I do go straight over the square ones but not at speed. They reckon it could be this causing it and that I should go to one side.

Anyone else heard of this?

Anyone got a pair of front wheels for an E39 M5?????

Potholes are the most likely cause I guess.

It doesn't take much to buckle a wheel.

The wheels were about the only part of my e34 M5 ownership that I never had concerns/issues with.

Lucky that I didn't 'upgrade' to an e39 then wink

Mine are buckled, getting them straightened soon tho, it's nit that costly, cheaper than new wheels anyway

Slightly oval wheels seems pretty common on cars these days. Lepsons will straighten them out if needed during the refurb process. I know that when mine (Neils) were done they found a couple that needed straightening before refurbing. That, coupled to a change of brake pad from Mintex to standard and some new front control arms sorted out the slight wobble that the car had when I bought it.

I have spoken to a couple of other people including a tyre centre and I am starting to think the specialist is pulling my plonker.

I get no sign of buckled wheels at any speed on the motorway and it should feel like the balancing is out if they were buckled. Im going to take it elsewhere for the brakes to be looked at but I dont understand why the garage would say this. Im sure the arms have been changed, someone else suggested the brake control bushes. Either way this is starting to piss me of now.

Good point mine drives fine otherwise its just when I hit the anchors hard, where are you taking yours? I want someone who knows what they are doing and not going to scuff my alloy's. M-Tek still have not got back to me from Friday.

I will go to BMWorx in Stoke Mandeville nr Aylesbury. Its means taking a day off but worth it because they know there stuff. The owner is Ex Stratstone BMW and did the clutch and rear diff seal on my car.

Sounds like we might have the same problem. My brakes were fine when all the discs and pads were changed in April. The shuddering has appeared in the last few weeks.

I will give them a ring its not far from me, my pads and discs were changed at 44k 5 years ago shes done 56k now. Want to get it sorted this week so going to take a couple of days off. I've still got a feeling its discs and pads now but seems low mileage to need that to be honest.

Sounds like it could be the "fluid control bushes" on the front suspension control arms. A slightly buckled wheel would probably balance out ok anyway, so it's potentially an unlikely cause of the wobble.

I'd be investigating pad deposit on the disk, the bushes and then the wheels in that order. Once you've ruled one out, move on to the next. smile

I had a shimmy/shudder on mine which I had thought was disk run-out, as it was one of the control arms was duff, since replacement everything has been peachy.

Took the car to someone else today.

One wheel is slightly buckled but the brake control arm bushes look like they need replacing because there was quite a lot of play when the wheels we moved.

Anyway, its booked in tomorrow so we will see if this cures it. The two front tyres are badly worn on the inside edge as a result so new boots are needed too.
