would a set of part worn Michelin Pilot Cup Sport tyres (about 3 mil left) for M3 19" wheels be worth?

Hi there,

To me, personally, they're not worth anything.

I'll explain - They are at the end of their useful and effective working life. We all know the legal limit is 1.6mm however I believe the test done by Autocar (I think!) showed that if the legal limit was 3mm (at least I think it was this depth!) the tyre's performance was much much better than close to 1.6mm. This means in potential situations, anything less than 3mm will have a substantial detrimental decrease in performance. That 'could' be the difference between hitting a pedestrian.. or not.

Time's are currently tough, there's no doubt in my mind, plenty of cars are being skimped on especially when it comes to tyres. The 'budget' brands that even with 5,6,7 mm of tread perform woefully are starting to crop up on cars you'd much rather see premium brand tyres on.

Back in the day, I'd often put on part worn tyres. Some lasted 6 months, some lasted 15 minutes when they blew out at 75 mph on the motorway. Been there done that - I'll never ever skimp on tyres again. I think it should be 'law' that the legal limit is increased, and that part worn tyres are sold only with 5mm or more of tread left.

I know that even brand new, premium tyres 'can' blow out as well - however the 'chances' of that compared to part worns is much much lower.

Good luck with the sale!

Cheers, Dennis!

thanks, I personally agree with you and would not drive my family round in anything less than good quality and condition tyres (I even tried runflats on a recent car!).

I am asking as they are sat in my garage at the moment and not really being useful to anyone.

There do seem to be a few people selling them on ebay so I may try on there.

Are they std pilots, or are they cups? Cups only come with 4mm when new.

Exactly.
The cups are in their prime. You will sell those all day long.
Dont bother with Ebay.
Stick them on on here on classifieds BMW parts section. They wont be on there long and i will let my mate know who is after a part worn set.

Happy days.

sorry to re-visit an old thread, but these tyres are now available, however I have realised I missed a + off the tyre name and have lost the email of the person interested, I will leave this open for a week or so if they are still interested and if not then will explore other options. Oh and I am not looking to sell them now, have taken on board a lot of comments and now feel unhappy selling used tyres, therefore they will go to someone prepared to make an appropriate donation to charity.
