just wondered if anybody can help me or send me in the right direction as i might need a specialist !!

i was just driving my m3 home with the hood down on the motorway when i noticed the back part of the car was lifting due to the wind i presume !! i panicked pulled over and the hood automatically closed itself fully. does it just need adjusting ??

also while i was at the side of the road the car was ticking over terrible and the car was shacking and juddering. was surprised because it drives lovely and was ticking over fine before i opened her up a little on the motorway !!

the clutch is really really stiff as well is this normal ??

And the gearbox is still smg apparently but converted to a manual is this good or bad ?? i really struggle to get the right gears its really letting the down as it runs sweet ( when moving)

No the clutch is not normal. An M3 clutch is really quite light.

Your converted SMG box sounds like a bodge. Do you know who converted it? Done properly, you have to remove the bellhousing and machine it. The bodge way of doing it is to weld some bits of metal around the gearstick to give the impression there are detent springs.

As for your idle issue, it could be a multitude of things. First step would be to get it hooked up to a computer and read the codes.

Thought it might be Cooks Ferry. It's one of their jobs I've seen before. A real bodge. As said, you either need to machine the bellhousing to accept detent springs or fit a replacement 6 or 5 speed.

My clutch is very heavy although it's a manual. It also has the braided clutch hose upgrade which could contribute.

Any proper engineering shop. You'd have to provide specs. You can get them off the US forum 'bimmerforums'. There's a very long sticky thread in the Euro M3 section all about it. Here it is http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.ph...

could well explain the gearbox conversion as the pump for the SMG gearbox sits behind the drivers side front wing and if damaged is very expansive to replace, When I looked many years ago a figure of £3k for the pump rings a bell.

Cheers guys

found out it was a stuck solenoid in the vanos and was quoted £450 to take it apart ant tell me what parts i need and if its bad £1300 for new vanos on top + fitting!!

it has since unstuck itself and running better and have found someone who will change me the seals and bolts and that should apparently sort it as its been cought early so shouldnt rattle much either!! fingers crossed

he also seems cofident he can sort my gearbox out as the gears dont line up. from 1st to second you have to pull slighty to the left and from 3rd goes straight down to 6th lol also 1st and reverse very very close and nothing stopping it going in to reverse!! WHAT A SHED ...looks good though and will have it all sorted soon enough.

cheers guys....AL

Here's a photo of a Cooks Ferry job.

They weld in a bar and a spring to give the impression of detent springs!

www.bmwowner.com might be able to help as well, its the best e36 forum.

Unfortunately, it sounds like you may have bought a bit of a money pit frown

I'm curious as to why you bought this car?

It sounds like a total munter.

Don't want to sound harsh but was also thinking the same. Did you not test drive it and give it a good look over before buying?

Phil Crouch at CPC has a very good reputation for work on VANOS issues.

I bought the car on monday so only had it 3 full days lol. i did test drive it and it drove sweet with no noises coming from the engine or vanos and i just thought i had to get used to the gears as there all quite close. it has only done 68k with history and receipts, its hpi clear and looks mint.

i should have learnt more about m3's really i just wanted to avoid the smg and a dodgy vanos but looks like i ended up with both lol. it wasnt until i pulled up at home 190 miles away i noticed it ticking over dodgy(stuck solenoid) and has since unstook and running sweet again. have since noticed litle things what i didnt notice before like odd headlights,a sprayed inner wing and simple stuff like no spare wheel or back head rests and cig lighter ond bulbs in ashtrays not working(not got round to looking yet but are they on same fuse or cld it be to do with wires when converting from smg!!)

The conversion was done at cooks but today i removed the gear stick cover and i can see 3 or 4 springs but just not in right positions. the guy whos doing my vanos says he can sort it !!

cheers guys, big lesson learnt DONT rush in all exited and buy the second m3 you ever looked at lol looks good tho smile

Don't worry, pretty much all M3's will break for more than they would sell for complete. Just set yourself a budget cut off point and the minute you go over it start breaking and punting the parts on eBay. Then get yourself a decent one from the proceeds.
