Hi,

13-14 months ago I bought an M5, nice car but I bought the wrong one, I didn't check it's servicing properly, some things on the iDrive had been reset without the work being done (ie brake pads) and altogether just not a good experience so I traded it in for a 335i around 6 months ago.

I have enjoyed the 335i, better car in terms of where I bought it from (BMW) and I've spent nothing on it at all. Recently I've had my head turned by M3's and Keighley Sports & Performance have one in stock that seems like it would suit me.

I'm worried that I'll be going back to something that's going to end up costing me a fortune in running costs but I know what to look for this time.

I'm not concerned about fuel or insurance, both will sit somewhere between M5 and 335i.

I don't even know what questions I need to ask here, I just wondered what other people thought, I know I have to make my own mind up but that's probably already done.

Hi Daz!

I wondered when something like this would happen!!

The M3 is a cracking car, of that there is no doubt. It's a bit lighter and sharper than the M5 and so if that floats your boat, then by all means go for it. That car in question is well specced, but is it not a bit leggy?

I've driven the M3 on track too and was surpised by the amount of understeer.....I hated the turn in and the body roll, as well as the steering feel.....the feel through the wheel really puts me off it, even as a roadcar.

The M5 is the daddy....nothing else comes close as a fabulous jack of all trades.....and the sound of that V10 is so utterly addictive.

A good man always learns from his mistakes.....I dare you to get another M5!

How did you find out, and did you buy it from BMW?

Seems to me that making the same mistake again? Going ahead with a car that you haven't fully asked all the right questions about and from someone that may not provide you with the peace of mind that say a BMW dealer and AUC warranty would. I would do some more research about the M3 and whether it really is what you want. Dare I say that the MB C63 is quite an interesting alternative, if you want something different (more compact size than the M5 but with the soundtrack and firepower to go with it, and easily another 50-60 bhp to be unleashed for very little money).

As well as doing some more research on the car you want I'd do some on the place you are thinking of getting that particular one from . It's not strictly name and shame but do a PH search they've been the subject of a number of threads on here and other forums and it's not all good by a long chalk

Keighley Motors seem a bit hit & miss and thinking sensibly about it that's not something I want when buying an M3, once bitten twice shy when buying a BMW from another dealer so this time it will have to be an AUC.

I bought the M5 from SCC in Leeds, it just had loads wrong and they were unwilling to sort out, tyres wore uneven, needed pads, discs reskimmed, oil change (which I knew about).

Drove a 6 speed manual M3 today and liked it, not a massive difference in performance over the 335i but a certain feeling you get sat behind the wheel of the "M" badge motor. I'm going to search for one, manual, coupe with a few extras like 19's.

This one seems like a nice car, problem is my 335i is silver with black so people wouldn't even notice I had a new car!!

Hey Jazzer

I'm not really sure what's putting me off the M5 again, just think I had a bad experience and I couldn't do it again, but who knows!

A friend owns a company near me that specialise in brakes, he took it in to skim the edges of the discs as they had a lot of rust on them. He showed me the pads and they were really worn so he swapped the lot and sensors for me.

Somebody had swapped the sensors and not the pads, then reset the iDrive. Explains why (according to iDrive) the pads were going down by about 1,000 miles every 100 I drove.

It's partly my fault though, the last BMW I had was a 2004 M3 and that didn't have iDrive, I was very unfamiliar with it. I should have spent more time on here and asked more questions, then I'd have known what to check.

I do now and I think the M3 is the future, well for me anyway :-)
