Whole new engine required for the M6. Very glad I paid the warranty renewal otherwise dealer reckons I'd be looking at £13k bill. A lesson for all those looking to buy at the moment that you need to buy with warranty.

Engine fault warning came on Tuesday night. Dealer originally said it was a coil failure they replaced coil but that didn’t fix it. Engine out and heads off revealed some sort of problem with the hydraulics and springs on the valves which apparently has caused debris to drop into the cylinders which has done irreparable damage. Don’t really follow the mechanics of it myself but sounds bad. All covered by warranty though.

£13k? I would say closer to £20K. I had an investigation, and new engine installation in my Z4MC and the bill was £13k. Thank god for warranties. I got a 2 year BMW warranty when I bought mine. What is the problem with yours?

Yes, apparently they`ll read coil failure when there is a loss of combustion from the cylinder.

A £20k repair bill would make it pretty close to a write off! I've just had a trade in offer of £23k on the car.

How much do these warranties cost?

Mine was a few pounds less than £1,000. You can select a cheaper option but have an excess to pay in the event of a claim.

Jeeeezzzz,

That sounds nasty. Was the car running rough or anything before the the check light?

Just a thought but would it be a good idea to push for write off if the bill is so large as a new engine could potentially affect resale values?
(thats if it was £20k not £13k)

Car was absolutely fine prior to the light coming on.

I've got a part ex deal against a 997tt which I'm thinking about. I rang the Porsche dealer yesterday and told him that the M6 was having a new engine and he has gone to check but doesn't think that it will change the trade in value.

The claim limit on the warranty is up to the purchase price of the vehicle if bought on AUC scheme. Not sure how this works if you added the warranty to a non dealer purchased car.

I wonder how many crated V10's BMW have left on the parts shelves for things like this, as engine production has now ceased.... as that might affect warranty costs/charges at the point a complete 'crate' engine can no longer be supplied...????

Good question. I expect that if an extended warranty is issued then it should be honouired under the same terms and conditions.
I bought an M3 while still under warranty and just before it ran out I purchased the extended warranty. No inspection required or anything. I guess as warranty had never lapsed it should never be an issue.

I would imagine they have quite a few engines left. But if they were to run out, surely they would not be able to offer a warranty on the engine? I'd like to see them try to get out of that one!

There will be enough for two years I would have thought depending, of course, on failure rates. I had one of the very last brand new S54 lumps for the Z4 in May of this year and that had been out of production over 2 years.

They'll be plenty of engines and other parts stashed away. I'm into 205GTIs and someone recently came across ten brand new 405 Mi16 engines from some french warehouse , that car went out of production over 15 years ago!

If BMW can re build classics, surely the V10 will not be an issue?

Seems the old M engines are not all that reliable. I wonder if people would be as understanding of similar engine failures if, say Fiat made its own M cars?
