Pilot sport cups as a road tyre (e46 M3)?
Discussion
Hi all,
I will have to replace the rears on my e46 M3 shortly and am toying with the idea of fitting PS Cups or R888s all round rather than Vredesteins again.
Since changing jobs recently I do very little mileage in the car, and have another with more sensible tyres for when it rains. However I might do a Europe trip (likely with a Ring track day, possibly Spa also) next year - how will they be if it rains?
Are PS cups a sensible tyre for what is effectively now only a low mileage weekend car?
Thanks in advance,
Nick

They're fine in the rain unless you hit standing water. Well, actually I only have experience of 888s. They really very very good in the wet but hit standing water and expect to step across the road.
The other issue is mileage. Make sure you get hard compound. I'm currently running medium A048Rs and they've done 1000 road miles and two sessions on track (just sessions i.e. about 25 minutes) and are already half done.

Cups (not Cup+) are good for around 5000-7000 road miles with correct camber and geo set up. They work well in the summer time as well as spring time and autumn, they just dont perform very well as the temp gets colder towards zero degrees
As said above they are fine in he damp and even wet but do not like standing water as the rain channels are pretty thin thus cant shift too much water out of the way.
Thye are ok for the car as long as you can choose not to take it if the weather is too wet to be safe, so fine for weekend specials. Saying that i have done verius euro trips on them and uk trackdays and have been caught with very low tread in eavy rain a few times and even though been nervous never had a moment yet.
TBH if you are planning just road trips and the odd Ring lap i personally would not bother with them as they only come into their own when hot and you are on the limit. Makes more sens to get Cup+ or just stick to PS2.
PS i have probably had around 15 sets over the last 5 years

I've ran both on my E46 M3. Cups are fantastic in their zone. IE warm, dry(ish), and up to temp. Outside that zone they were simply awfull.
R888's offer the same grip levels and are a lot less fussy about weather and getting up to temp. Fantastic dry grip, very good wet grip but like the cups they don't like standing water.
Wear rates I would say are pretty equal. More road noise from the R888's.
I would run 888's now as a preference. However I now have them on seperate wheels for the track and run Uniroyal Rainsport2's on the road wheels.
Best road tyres I have had on my M's ever!!
BTW. Uniroyal is owned by Michelin.
