No, it is 420PS (Mertic, DIN), which is 414.25 BHP.

Correct!

Just like a Cayman S, which was 291 BHP or 300PS IIRC

No, PS is horsepower, it's the same thing. Look on the BMW UK website and you will see they list it as 420hp.

They've got it slightly wrong on the website I think.

HP is not an official unit of any kind. The European horsepower is PS, though the DIN standard measure of power is the kilowatt. In Britain horsepower is generally measured in bhp.

1kw = 1.35962PS = 1.341021bhp

Therefore, as the power listed is 309kw

309kw = 420.123PS = 414.376bhp

would 6 hp make a difference, being over 400 anyway?

maybe it's something about Caterham drivers wink

seriously mine feels like a big fat Caterham and I think it's the best thing since sliced bread.

I drove a friends 997 C2 the other day - and although I loved it, I preferred the level of M3 grip (less) biggrin

I actually took mine for a decent drive today - a couple of hours up the M6, and well, it is just hard to fault really. Exceptionally comfortable and refined and when a gap in the traffic opens up it easily accelerates to 70 mph (and yes I did manage to do 70 mph on the M6 this morning!). Being a bit of a luddite - I'm not sure I could tell the difference between 414 and 420 bhp anyway....

lol. I have to say after considering much... the S5, RS4, XKR, TTS, and the 911S I have decided to go for the M3 this year. A part of me still wants the 911/XKR but with my young son I think an M3 is best.

Would you go for the 911 in the future?

I think I probably wouldn't go for the 911. It's a great car, but I work in IT - and there are just too many around for me in my world.

If I can ever afford to upgrade from an M3 i'd be going R8 or maybe older 430 etc

You got a M3.. why wont you be able to afford an upgrade!?

That is one of my concerns. If I buy a 35k M3, 20k cash and 15k loan over 5 years. The M3 will only be worth £10k after the loan has been paid off!

I'd love to get one of the V8's now but my next car has to be used as my daily driver and sadly 22mpg at todays prices will make my commute too expensive I think.

confused

So a 300PS car is 291BHP = 0.970 BHP per PS ......

..... and a 420PS car is 414.25BHP = 0.986 BHP per PS ????

Why isn't the 420PS car actually 407.4BHP, or alternatively a 414.25 BHP car actually 427 BHP

22mpg is the offical number. I think it will be a lot lower!
