I was just wondering what would be the best M car for under the £15k mark. I quite fancy an e39 M5 but an Alpina sounds like a good option (not an M car i know, but a nice alternative).
What do you guys think?

Need much more info to answer the question: how many miles per year, what's your typical drive like, do you prefer a torquey or a high-revving engine, manual or smg, etc?

E39 M5 and E46 M3 are the obvious choices.Personally i would go for the M3.
£15k will buy you a very nice example these days,an M5 for the same money would be a touch older, higher miles etc and im guessing the running costs would be higher too.

Also depends on your circumstances,if you have a family then a bigger car with four doors may suit you better.

E39 M5's are cheaper to buy. £15k would buy you a very low mileage, very clean car.

Bear in mind that M5's start from around £6000 these days, and £10,000 can buy you a very nice example.

I'd go for this and have a driving holiday across Europe in it. Its a facelift, nearly last of the line model and and it'll save you a few quid in the process! Looks nice and unmolested.

The reason I've steered towards the M5 is because my last car was an M3 Evo, as good as it was I'm not sure if i'd have another M3. The car must have 4 seats and be comfortable, I've been looking not just at Beemers too but noone seems to offer the same mixture of luxury, speed and image that an M car gives.
That M5 looks the dogs!

& perhaps the E30 M3. Different horses for different courses.

E34 M5 3.8, six speed. A way better drivers car than the more lardy E39's. Hand built not production line built, rare, a classic shape and the sound above 4,000 rpm is amazing. Great handling, quick, wonderful brakes and soon to be collectable.

I would love an M3 but wanted four doors and the appeal of a V8 was too much to resist. At the end of the day they are both cracking cars so try them both

That would be a brave choice.

I think that even if you managed to bag a cherished and properly maintained example(and a great number of them are nowhere near being in that category), if used as an everyday car it would be an uphill struggle in both time and money to keep it that way.

Whilst the E39 M5 is by no means a cheap car to run, I think that nowadays the E34 requires a level of care and maintanence that is a country mile beyond that required by the E39.

That said, fantastic cars and fair play to anyone who takes one on.

tend to agree with rags

At the moment I have an E46 M3 as my daily

Thinking about needing to tow next year (race car not caravan!) so E39 M5 would be ideal

Weekend toy E30 M3 would be and is my choice

as a track car to be played with a driven hard an E36 M3 evo or GT would be my choice with a few £k for mods.

Worth pointing out that the main dealer/Specialist servicing costs for Inspection I/IIs are a good deal cheaper for the M5.

The M5 is heavy on fuel, but then the way I used to drive my M3 is makes little odds - both are expensive.

I find the M5 is cheaper to insure fully comp too.

In a nutshell yes

Although I bought my M5 purely for its Motorway/A-road prowess and not its practicality.

As for the E34, I wouldn't recommend one to someone who is new to //M cars. They're cantankerous in the extreme and generally a bit too old for the daily grind. Fine as a weekend car, but you have to really appreciate what they stand for to pick one over something like an M3 or Z3M.
