Fuel Consumption Data - long term

Im curious to know how to obtain long term fuel consumption data for my 2010 E90 M3 as the instruction book says "average fuel consumption is calculated for the period since the engine was last switched on.” Dont want to go through the old process of monitoring fuel in / miles at the petrol pump.

I logged mine over 10,000 miles it averaged 22.8 MPG. Exactly what the book said!
Funny my new 550i M Sport 2011 model is very good on fuel as well, 28.6MPG over 580 miles so far.
