Hi all,

First post here, been reading for a long time though!

I am in the process of trying to change my car. I've got a 987 Boxster S which I've had for a good while now, its been a great car, really enjoyed it, but fancy changing while there's still some money in it etc..

The toss up is between the classic 997 911 Carrera S or BMW M3...

Currently, my head is with the M3, but I'm worried its going to cost loads more to run than the Boxster, has anyone changed over and noticed the costs hugely increase?

I've been out in both cars and the 911 i can afford has very little kit and is a bit dated, where as the m3 has all the gadgets you'd need..

I just don't know, when i bought my boxster, i got it from a porsche dealer and it was really exciting and new etc etc, but I dont feel the same excitement about the M3? Not sure if i'm just being a retard!

Thanks for reading, opinions/abuse/thoughts would be appreciated!

I know what you mean about the excitment. After a while it will be driven by all the rudeboys and then it'll look like trash. Where is the excitment.. right?

It's a good looking car, shame about the interior.

I have driven both, the 911S and the M3. The 911 feels special until the 997 engine pops. The M3 is reliable from what I see but it will lose so much money. ouch.

I'm buying a used one potentially so will lose but hopefully not a tearworthy amount!

How much does it cost to fill one up with VMax and normal unleaded?

Does the car produce more power if you use super?

How many miles on average do you get from a tank of fuel?

thanks again!

a friend of mine (before someone nicked it) had an M3 and it delivered 18-21 mpg on our long trip to Tuscany i think it was 21/22 ish.

The boxster S probably would deliver nearly 30 mpg on a similar run -

Id have the boxster s TBH, unless you needed rear seats...

I'd have to go for the 911 over the M3,

Both great cars, but the M3 lacks excitement and involvement compared to the 911.

Depends how practical you need to be?

It depends what you want, if you do without usable back seats and a decent boot go for the 911.

I made the mistake of driving the 911 first and then the M3, as a result the steering on the M3 felt dead and the car just seem to lack something.

I know it’s not a fair test and the E92 M3 is an excellent all rounder!

thats the thing, i'm not 100% but i read somewhere (here i think) that people think that then when they've got an m3 they love it! I'm also concerned as my budget will stretch to an 05 997 carrera s but i fancy a car with bluetooth / ipod / usb and a few more toys.. which the 911 wont have..

why is this such a tricky choice!?

thanks for your replies!

I presume you are looking at coupe 997 and M3.

Whilst not exactly what you are looking for, I have had a 997s cab since new, now nearly six years old, and also have an M3 saloon that is just coming up to 2 years old.

I don't think you'll find much difference in running costs - I think the M3 will be slightly more expensive on servicing, but if you're getting an 05 997, then you are probably going to have more unscheduled costs. Fuel consumption on both cars is within 1mpg, both hovering around 20mpg.

My 997 is quite well specced but does feel old fashioned compared to the M3. M3 probably a touch faster in a straight line (that would probably be reversed with a gen 2 997). 997 certainly feels more alive as a car, it changes direction much quicker than the M3. It took me quite a while to gell with the M3, for the first month or so, was a bit underwhelmed by it, now I absolutely love it.

They are both great cars but with different characters - I think the M3 engine is probably one of the best in existence (perhaps M5/M6 drivers will have a different view) - but you need to drive both and decide what you like best.

thanks for all your replies, yeah its the coupe 997.. I think that describes how i feel 'underwhelmed' but i know its a brilliant car! its daft really!

I'm going to have another go in an m3 then make my mind up i think!

The car i'm looking at is well specced and has done 25k miles, is there anything i should look out for / check for if i decide to go ahead?

Either will be an improvement over the hairdressers boxster wink

It's a real tough choice between the M3 and 997 though! I guess biggest problem will be getting a test drive where you can really drive it the way you would like to experience it. My guess is the M3 would be a little quicker, but not quite the same marque as the porka. I'm sure you will love which ever way you go though!

Hire the 997 and M3 each for a week back to back and then get back in the Boxster.

You'll know which you want.

An hour or so's test drive doesn't give you any idea at all.

£700 or so rental when you're buying a £30k car, peanuts really to make sure you're making the right decision.

I speak as an E92 M3 owner, generally quite keen on Porsches, and on the 997 C2S in particular. The M3 is far more practical, more modern, better equipped, more relaxing on a journey (much less road noise at speed) and a touch quicker in a straight line. The 997 is more tactile, generally delightful to drive, and more noticed as a posh car. If an owner had not said otherwise, I thought the 997 would be significantly more economical and therefore go further on a tank - personally I average 20 mpg and fill at about 260 miles, though I would expect about 25 on a motorway journey within easy reach of the speed limit.

If you are happy to have something as old as the 911 you are considering, perhaps an M6 should alos be on your shopping list!

From here it is entirely down to your emotional connection with the car.

I'm considering chopping my E92 in for a 997s and trying to find a rental for an extended test drive.

Tell you what, you buy a 997 and we will swap for a week. smile
