Any idea why when cornering hard there is a noise that can only be described as an abacus coming from the boot? Cannot work it out and its starting to drive me mad.

Yep. Sounds like a large abacus is in the boot. When I corner you can hear somthing that sounds like metal sliding along metal.

Have you checked all is well in the battery compartment or perhaps the trim for the rear hatch?

Does the boot lock OK? Could be something to do with the locking mechanism that has broken off and is sliding around inside the skin of the boot?

As as mentioned before, have you checked for abacus's (<abaci?) in the boot?

I had a look around but couldn't see much. It needs to go in for a service soon so will get them to check. Was just wondering if this is quite a common (but weird) issue.

Thanks all. Is this a big/expensive problem?

Change them in pairs on M cars, about £98 each though it can be a few hundred for fitting etc. Lots go with aftermarket spring kits too as the OEM ones will need replaced every 40k miles or so.

Rear springs are very easy to fit as a diy.
