Reality bites, I'm swapping my M3 for a 330d. Technically, can I still contribute to this forum, let alone read it?!

Why are you flogging the M3 for a 330d?

sorry, I do not follow. Unless your 30k+? Are you refering to salary? If so what salary do you think you need to be on to be able to purchase, own and run a M3?

30k+ miles per year, to take advantage of diesel's better fuel economy.

I've a friend who works for BMW who does me very good deals. At the moment the residual values of M3s are dropping by about a grand a month. That's eating into my deposit for a new one thus pushing my monthly payments up every time I change. I was going for a !M coupe but the payments for that would be £50 a month more than my M3 because the projected value for that car after four years is about £15,000! Also I'm led by what they can sell on and obviously the ubiquitous 330d is a better seller. Finally i do about 18,000 miles a year and I seem to spending an awful lot of money on fuel at the moment. My only salvation is that I can always change after six months if I really hate it.

Wow im reading my twin!

I did this 3 weeks ago with my mate at Barons. My monthly fuel bill has dropped 200 quid as has my monthly payment. I feel quids in and I tell you what I am loving the instapower of the 330d! Add to this its always in the right gear which has highlighted just how frustrating the 7 gear dct really is. The m3 was fun but a bit much for my commute....eventually the costs began to outweigh the fun factor.

Really? How comes?

My M3's on BMW Select for four years, something which now i look back at it, probably wasnt the smartest move and i might need to change at somepoint to a 330d depending on my work

Is it just as simple as re-arranging the agreement?

10k miles pa, fuel costs for the year:

M3 = £3342
330d = £1487

OK, no serious sums required smile

I'm not entirely sure, but my friend takes as much off the initial price as he can ( a fair whack ) then puts me on the cheapest monthly payment. Later he'll tell me when it's best for them to sell the car on, i.e. without too many miles on. The problem with my M3 and M's in general ( so I'm told ) is that they're suffering huge depreciation at the moment. Mine lost £2200 in the last two months.

The depreciation thing is a fact, I'm looking at 15 month old cars at the moment, I expect to pay £40kish for a car that was £60k+ new..

I would expect to run it for another 3 years and lose between £15k and £18k on it.

Ditto, and yes. Provided you put in a decent deposit at the start and they give you a reasonable trade in price on the M, they will settle the old finance and transfer across your deposit to a new car. Definitely worth a chat with your local stealer - I was most surprised and never really expected to be trading so soon but new job forces sale etc.
