As a general ball park figure, what would be a fair price to pay to have bushes supplied and fitted to an 1999 e39 M5?

Thanks
Andy

I've been quoted upto 3-4 hours labour to replace the rear ball joints alone. Apparently they can be a bugger to get off.

How many bushes are there in total?

All of them would be nice yeah. Want the car to be spot on and tight, which ones are the best to go for? Some people recommend changing the fronts for X5 bushes but which bush does this refer to? thrust arms or what?

The X5 bushes refer to the thrust arms, those are the banana shaped ones at the front. Some people go for the poly powerflex bushes but they can be a bit harsh on the road. I replaced mine with standard and it made a world of difference, also did the smaller front wishbones. Before you get the thrust arm bushes changed check the ball joints on the other end of the arm as mine were shot to pieces and it was much easier in the end to just change the whole arm with new bush already installed.
I would do those and then the rear ball joints first as they seem to take the most abuse. You should notice a world of difference. I did my rear ball joints myself and it isn't a hard job if you have the correct tool to push out the joint (I got mine second hand off ebay for £50) but is a PITA without it. It took me under 3 hours to do both sides on the drive outside and I'm no speedy Gonzalez!

Thanks for the reply, i've got the car booked in on friday to have some of the rear bushes done as the back has just developed a nasty squeak and it sounds like an old bed at the minute so if the fronts are too labour intensive then i might get them done aswell.

ps. Has anyone got any pics of the underside to show which bushes to do first?

It sounds like you arn't sure what they are doing.

There are two bushes at the front which are brake reaction bushes and are often refered to as the X5 bushes.

The rear diff carrier has 4 bushes on it and there are two balljoints at the rear too. All of these wear over time but replacing them all would be quite costly.

I'm not quite sure which bushes at the back are being changed on friday, no. But the mechanic is a friend of mine and has done all my cars for the past 10 years so i trust him enough to change whatever needs doing, i know its not the rear anti-roll bar bush. He had it in for a quick look today and while it was on the ramp i was rocking it up and down while he fiddled to see where the noise was coming from.

I had Powerflex brake reaction bushes fitted to help my brake shudder issues.

As soon as I drove the car I could tell that there was extra firmness up front but I dont even notice it now.

Did it clear the shudder?

No, so far I have replaced the reaction bushes, front discs under warranty and had everything else checked suspension/bush wise. It wad back in at BMW yesterday to have discs checked and they tried to blame it on the drag link but I feel it through the pedal not the wheel. I told them to go out and get them warm and try some firm stops. Hey presto they agreed there was something not right. They found deposits on the discs and asked if it's stood for long periods but I use daily. The discs are within tolerance but they want to change one of the rears under warranty but I don't think it will help.

I'm going to try the bedding in process again today to see if that helps. This problem has been going on for months now and cost a lot of money frown

yeah I guess calipers are the next step but I cant find any evidence of them sticking and its an expensive avenue to explore isnt it.

You don't need to replace the calipers, get the overhaul kits.
