Supercharged E36 M3 Evolution anyone???
Discussion
I've been looking at E36 M3s recently to buy as a track car. The problem is I was out in one last weekend, and as quick as they seemed in their day, I just don't think one would be quick enough these days with all the 500BHP Evos and Subarus out there these days!! So I thought about supercharging an M3 Evo. Has anyone any idea about what BHP can be reliably achieved, or a rough cost?? And most importantly, does anyone have one, or know of one??? Cheers!!
I think your biggest problem would be to source a kit. I've been thinking for a long time about doing this to mine but have rarely seen a kit available - they normally pop up in the classifieds second hand.
You also my want to do some homework on the power they give too as if my memory serves me correctly, the e36 M3 really doesn't lend it self well to forced induction unlike the e46 in as much as the engines are not as strong.
Keep us updated though please on the progress as i'd still like to look into this.

Its more about the squishy bit behind the wheel. I can happily outrun £90,000 Porsche GT2's etc at the Ring and Trackdays in my 3.0 M3. Buy a standard car, take it to the track and you will be very suprised!!!!!
If you are going to Supercharge it, a friend of mine has an ESS Supercharger fitted, ordered the kit from the states, the problem with it is getting the car to run smoothly once its fitted, I think his is about 400bhp

tters may say otherwise but from my experience 500bhp evo/subarus are a very rare sight on trackdays. My old 3 litre e36 m3 could more than hold its own with our Japanese friends.
I agree with you to an extent. I'm very much of the opinion that some of the BHP figures from our Japanese friends are often exaggerated, but I'm seeing more and more cars nowadays that could almost be believable!!

I've had 3 E36 M3s, 3 E46 M3s, and am now fortunate enough to have an E92 M3, and feel the need to go even quicker on the track!!!

The Ring is a different place. I've been a few times and it makes Mice of Men!!! Lol. I totally agree with what you are saying about outrunning things in a 3.0 M3, but I still think about the minority that I really want to beat!! To the OP, dont let anyone put you off doing it if you have your heart set on this dude!
i have been wanting to do this for a while but have not been able due to scarcity of the parts needed(very hard to find)and also (but less so) the possible expense of it if it all goes belly up (read blown motor).
Firstly there are only a couple of manufacturers (if that) that make a kit that would be e36 evo suitable, (ESS is one of them and i cant remember the other one, as for the American ones; active autowerk/dinan etc are not suitable for uk evo's). There definately isn't a standard "off the shelf ready packaged solution" for the evo unfortunately and alas as the evo is getting a bit long in the tooth, there prob wont now be one as no one wants to spend the money developing an "off the shelf package". I did once see an ess kit for £3500 in Ph and via an ebay ad but it was sold relatively sharpish (like within a couple days of the ad going up).
CA automotive want £7000-£8000 for their kit (ESS based), which when you consider is between 2 and 3 thousand pounds more than the asking price for an average evo, is extortionate to say the least. This kit should be priced around half that and it would fly off the shelves as i know loads of enthusiastic evo owners who at that price point would happily cough up the reddies for the conversion. Unfortunately, seeing as CA are the only UK company to offer any such conversion, they can get away with charging what they like.
pff in sweden are very well known for forced induction BMWs, as are V.S. motors in norway. if you are serious, i would speak to them about how realistic it would be to supercharge your evo, and hopefully they can give you a price, i would imagine it would be less than £8000. if you go for a mild supercharged kit, there is no reason why you should'nt be able to run 400 ish bhp on standard internals....but that is also dependent on the milage of your engine and how worn it's internals are etc.....
good luck with it mate, keep us posted on how you get on.....

Because they've all blown up on the way or long before. And too much power can make a car undrivable. Drag race heros maybe but round a track is different. M3 EVO properly sorted is a blistering track car
