I think there is a Mark IV version. Loads on the M5 board and BMW5 forum.

Most people go to navtvman

CD units were the Mark I, II and III
the DVD based unit was the Mark IV

Not sure what the latest CD map disc was (I assume thats what you're asking about) but the DVD based ones used to have 2 updates a year. I'd imagine you can get a more recent CD but I know they only ran them on for a few years once the DVD unit was available.

You can swap to a Mark IV computer (the drive in the boot) and to a 16:9 screen without too many problems..

Mk4 DVD based with 16:9 widescreen is a huge improvement over the Mk1/2/3 with half size monitor. Easy to DIY - eBay is your friend.

Don't think this is true fella (apart from the bit about 16:9 being a huge improvement over 4:3!) - it's the drive in the boot that distinguishes the MkIII/MkIV - for example I (and lots of other owners) have a Mk3 CD-based system but with the full widescreen display.

In terms of upgrading the maps, I believe this fella
http://www.bmw-maps.co.uk/ is well-recommended. See also that he has the MKIV drive for sale at the moment - I believe it's "plug and play" (just replace your drive in the boot) and allows you to run the DVD maps, although I'm not positive it works with the 4:3 screen. I would be tempted to upgrade the screen too.

This the guy I use (as do lots of others): http://www.bmw-satnav.co.uk/

I have a widescreen satnav with a mk3 drive and I got my new 2010/11 disc from him.

Ordered, received an e-mail that night that he'd posted it and received it the next day. Can't say fairer than that. Top bloke.

Mk3 with 16:9 is not uncommon, but the Mk4 DVD upgrade is a big improvement thumbup DVD system is much faster, postcode searching, 3D etc. You can upgrade in parts, so you are already half way there if you already have the 16:9. I originally had a Mk3 system, before upgrading to the Mk4. Worth it imho.

I think doing the upgrade is a bit pricey personally - I'd rather have a noisier exhaust/remap for the same money, but I see where you're coming from, the DVD-style is so much more modern.

My 04/2001 model has a 16:9 screen and drive marked DVD in the boot but the system seems pretty poor - do I definitely have a 'Mk 4' system if I have DVD (I can check the disc is a DVD rather than a CD too)? I'd happily spend the minimal outlay for the new disc if it gains me the postcode search function and 3D view, neither of which it seems to have now!

DVD drive means it's the MK4 but if the OS has never been upgraded then you maybe running a very early version of the MK4 software.

It maybe possible to download such software and burn it onto a CD to update your system. Obviously I wouldn't encourage that kind of behaviour or for a second suggest that you check out www.xoutpost.com and their navigation system forum which is a brilliant source of all kinds of information about the NAV systems in E39,E46,E53 etc's
