I was making my way along the above road in my silver E39 523i when I caught some distance behind in my mirror another silver E39...looked to be closing so I thought I would kick my old girl down a gear, y'no...just so I didn't look like Miss Daisy when........

Yep.....was a bloody M5 and shot past me like a Bavarian Exocet!

I dipped my foot again, 2.5 straight 6 screaming!

Bah.....what was the point, M5..gone! frown

If it wasn't for the bloody running costs as a daily I would get one but even the 2.5L is getting to juicy at today's fuel prices!

EDIT/Update:

My wee little 2.5 E39..

Twere'nt me.

Cos' I'd never do such a thing as showing a fellow BMW E39er just how much the M5 really goes.

hehe

I may have done this to a chavvy'd up Scooby WRX yesterday. He got the full brunt of 3rd and 4th gear, and I 'think' he may have been trying based on the black smoke and pop as he changed from 3rd to 4th...

The other side of the coin - I think my M3 saloon has similar or slightly faster acceleration than an E39 M5 - anyway followed a GTR off a roundabout onto a dual carriageway the other day and, purely for curiosity sake, stuck the accelerator to the floor for a short burst. I wasn't even close - that thing shifts.

E36 or e9x

would be surprised if a standard GTR could walk away from a V8 M3, having seen several e60 m5's literally leave gtr's for dust

Having owned both an E60 M5 and a GTR, there is no way it would leave a GTR for dust. Nissan in stock tune would have an M5 covered at all speeds up to 120. From rest or a lowish speed rolling start the GTR is much faster. An E92 M3 is as quick as the M5 from rest and its not close.... really.
Standard GTRs get to 60 in 3.5 seconds(New one is 3.1s !! ) and they do 11.8s 1/4 miles at Santa pod.
Mildly tuned , remap and exhaust, maybe intakes, they're dipping under 11s for a 1/4 mile.

Agreed, having seen them run at VMax against tuned V10 M5's and destroy them, there would be no contest against a newer M3 or E39 V8.

I know this. I'm running 418bhp/400lb/ft and was absolutely destroyed by a standard GTR at VMax.

I guess many GTR's have been remapped too. From my experience of a remapped GTR running over 550bhp, they'll obliterate anything the cheap side of a Zonda.
