My baby's poorly frown

I've managed to shear the top coil off of the rear offside spring on my M3. It's not a huge job to fix and I can do it at home, but the problem I'm getting is actually finding the part to do it!

I'm going to do both sides (I'll have all the gear there, so why not), but I just can't find the rear springs alone without shelling out for all 4. I've gone direct to BMW and they just want silly money (£400 for just the rears!). I've done ebay but they're either from written off cars, lowering springs (no ta!) or sets of four (makes sense, but I don't need 4!!)

Does anyone know of a reputable and reasonable place to source just 2 rear springs from? (I'm in Southampton, so nearby or online preferable!)

(also, I've heard stories from people that this is a common fault, is that true?)

Euro car parts... ?

My mate had his rears replaced on a E46 sport last year by EmTec in Salisbury and it was peanuts from memory so you must be able to buy the odd spring.

I paid £170 for for a pair of rear springs from my BMW main dealers last year for my E46 M3 and my mate fitted them for free at his garage(5 mins each side). Try some other main dealers, the quote you got of £400 is clearly a piss take.

They are a common problem on all E46 models, not just the M3.Mine offside rear broke at about 55k miles, and its always best to replace both at the same time.

Halliwell jones BMW warrington 01925 248000 is where i got mine from if you want to give them a try, they might mail you a pair.

My local BMW dealer quoted me over £200! Robbing gits. I got them from BMWMINIParts in the end. Same price but I didn't have to collect.

Is it a common fault? Is it ever! Mines on it's third set of rear springs now (at 79,000 miles)

3 SETS?!?! Damn, I count myself lucky then, it's on 72k at the moment and the old springs look like original parts (from the wear signs etc)!

I'll give the BMWMiniparts place a shot then, clearly four hundred sheets is more than a bit of a pisstake!! Thanks (as always) for your help guys, much appreciated.

One of mine went the other month so I've bought eibach springs. They only lower the rear 10mm and the ride is near as damn it oem. I know a few
M3 owners and they say springs last about 2 years which is why I didn't want oem again! Cardiff Sytner wanted £107 per spring!!

I didn't go for aftermarket springs, for a couple of reasons; I don't want to make the suspension any harder than it already is - but mainly I don't want to give BMW a reason to refuse a claim if the worst should happen and my car should suffer the dreaded sub-frame issue. How p*sseed off would you be if they refused to fix your car due to you having non-standard suspension parts?

I think I paid around £100 for mine through Munich Legends, Genuine parts.

I was told to keep the receipt as there's a fair chance they'll snap again before the 2 year warranty is up.

Brother in law bought so cheap pattern springs for his 325 and one of them had snapped again with 6 months (actually think it was nearer 3)

Wow, you definitely should be able to get 2 rear springs from the dealer.

I paid £192 for 2 in March (I asked for a discount, and they gave me 5%).

They are easy to fit yourself, so best off doing that if you have the space and tools (the most useful tool for this job being a fat mate).

Btw, old vs new:

Old one was in 3 parts, one of those parts was missing!
