Hi guys, I've got a few questions and I haven't got time this week to whittle away an afternoon on google. Hoping the collective experience of the MX5 community can help pique my curiosity!!

1. On my 2.5 is the oil pressure gauge accurate in any way, shape or form or is it more for show? When I'm giving the car death I'd expect the pressure to rise but its steady at just over half way all the time. If I needed to top up the oil would it show as decreased pressure? If there was very little oil in the car would it even register on the gauge?

2. Speaking of oil, how accurate is the dipstick? Every time I have gone to check on my 43k mile car (which I have owned since 37k) I haven't used up any oil whatsoever. I have heard the engines on the MX5 can like a bit of oil, what is the usual amount to fill per 1000 miles for a healthy MX engine?

3. What S/S exhaust would be best for me - I want something sporty sounding when revved a bit but that doesnt fart around town past the post office at 20mph making all the grannies shout at me to slow down. If it frees up a couple of ponies that would be excellent also.

4. Have heard that drilling the airbox is better than an expensive induction kit - is that right? I would like a couple of extra horsepower if possible and an improved sound but again dont want it to sound chavvy.

5. How much have you lot paid a detailer for going over an MX5 with a polishing machine and to get chips/scratches out - think mines a bit battle scarred.

6. Can anyone recommend a good product that gets rid of those fine scratches you get on the interior plastics such as on the glovebox?

7. Does my car have the 'big brakes'? Its a 2004 Euphonic 1.8

Cheers for any help

1. It's an "oil gauge" not an oil-pressure gauge. i.e. it's the same as the oil light, it tells you there is some oil pressure. They stopped fitting real oil-pressure gauges around '94.

2. Your car shouldn't use any oil at all. They only start using oil when they get a bit old and worn. Mine doesn't use any oil and that really is given death on a regular basis on road and track.

3. Exhausts are a difficult one as everyones taste is different. Best to listen to a few and decide for yourself. Don't expect any extra power from it though.

4. Again, I find it hard to believe a drilled airbox will actually add any power. There are some very expensive and well designed induction kits that add very little power. They do sound good though.

5. Nothing at all. My car has stone-chips all over the front of it so I can't see the point of paying for detailing. It looks lovely and clean from a good was & wax anyway.

6. Nope.

7. It might. Not sure.

Thanks for answering Lazza. Probably best to stick with my k&n panel filter and original airbox for now. Bit disappointed by the oil gauge, is there a mod to revert it to be a proper gauge?

Also another question - when Im holding the accelerator steady at about 2500 rpm then slightly accelerate some more there seems to be a very very slight judder, and it feels a bit flat. Is this the leads / spark plugs etc on the blink? It doesnt really happen on super unleaded only on normal 95 ron I have noticed.
