Cat Issues......
Discussion
No not the Furry sort.
Basically it seems to be falling apart from the inside - which is apparently a pretty common complaint. Makes lovely rattly sounds - whicih are definitly not coming from loose heatsheilds or anything else.
Anyway. I'd like to replace with a silenced decat, which at about 50 quid is much cheaper than I expected. Several questions:
1: Its a 94 Eunos - what length is this age cat? All all Eunos 370mm?
2: Emmisions & MOT? As a 94 import - I think they can default the test? However my log book says Mazda MX5 on it? It clearly isn't - badges, VIN number and lots of Japanese writing confirm otherwise. The v5 also says on the front manufactured overseas and imported.
3: What other effects can I expect? Louder? Current exhaust is mx5part single exit. Will it really free any extra power up?
4: How easy is it to swap out? Simply unfastening old rusty bolts, drop cat out, insert new cat, replacing joining gaskets, refasten with shiny new bolts?
Christ this is turning into an expensive car year.

If the V5 says Mazda MX5 that's what it will be tested as, the MoT stations have no choice on that, they enter the reg no into the database and it comes back with the model and the emissions test values for that car. You might be able to get DVLA to change it for you but don't count your chickens on that one.

unless you go to a specialist, mines a 1992 eunos, but is a mazda mx5 on the v5 with a decat and they just did the non cat test no questions asked..Dan - I have the silenced decat on mine, which is also a 94 import.
I wont name names but "the chap in Sheffield who's close to you and has a lot of MX-5s" has passed mine 2 years in a row no problems with the emissions at all.
PS I cant remember whats on my logbook but its not correct either, 'Mazda Roadster MX5' IIRC.
RE question 3 and 4 - I think it does make it a fair chunk louder. I like it though.
Its pretty easy to fit as long as it all comes apart ok. Give the bolts a spray with plusgas through the week before you change it. Also check you have the right gaskets as I recall I had one that was wrong and had to bodge it till a new one arrived. Pipe comes with new nuts and bolts I think so you dont have to worry too much about the old ones being fecked.
